On Friday we hosted our Music Department Holiday Concert, which has been a longstanding tradition at MJS. Our Orchestra, Choir and Band performed various music selections for our entire MJS community to help spread holiday joy as we all got ready for winter break. The best part of this tradition is when our Jazz Band plays Feliz Navidad and our staff come up to sing along. By the end of the piece the entire auditorium was singing! Great job to all of our performers, music directors and a big thank you to our entire MJS community.
This week was filled with spirit during our Waltz into Winter Spirit week! From a white out, to ringing in the new year, to favorite winter hat, to peppermint day and pajama day our students and staff had a blast! Thank you to all those who participated.
December is filled with celebrations and special occasions. Culture Club explored a special event which dates back thousands of years: Winter Solstice. Mrs. DeRosa talked about the astronomical significance and the tilt of the earth. Now, we are ready for the official first day of winter, the shortest day of the year, and our longest shadows on Saturday, December 21st. We learned a little about the historical importance of the solstice around the globe from Iran to Scandinavia. Her daughter, Sam (MJS and MHS graduate), led us through a few traditions, including setting intentions, connecting with nature, and focusing on our inner balance. Sam, an art therapy major, brought numerous stones and discussed their meaning from boosting confidence to promoting inner stability. Students then made Intention Bracelets, choosing their stones based on their individual hopes and dreams. A great way to wrap up 2024!
On Thursday we had the opportunity to make a special presentation to our PTO and MEF. These two organizations continually help to support our entire MJS community including staff and students throughout the school year. Our student council presented a bag filled with handmade cards of gratitude that were made by our students. It was a special moment to share with our PTO and MEF. On behalf of MJS we say thank you for your continue partnership and support!
On Wednesday night we came together as a community to celebrate our Music Department with our Orchestra and Chorus concerts. The night was filled with beautiful music to help us get into the holiday spirit. Thank you to our Orchestra Director, Ms. McCormick and our Chorus Director, Mr. Mallick for sharing their love of music with our students and helping them grow as musicians. Thank you to our families for all you do behind the scenes to support your children in their passion to follow their musical journey. Congratulations to our students and directors for two great concerts!!
Our MJSAO Basketball season is off to a great start. We were so excited to start up our girls basketball team and our Cheerleading squad along with our boys basketball team this year. The student athletes and coaches are doing a great job. We are looking forward to a continued season of success for all!

In Madison, we utilize a 1:1 Chromebook model where all students (grades 6-12) receive a district owned Chromebook to utilize during the school day and at home. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is important that Chromebooks be maintained and handled in a responsible way. As we continue to move through the school year, we wanted to utilize this time as a reminder for our students and families about the importance of handling Chromebooks with care to prevent damage to the device. The district has expectations and protocols that are listed on the district website that we continue to follow at the building level.
We would like to highlight the specific section regarding lost and damaged chromebooks as a reminder to all parents and guardians:
In the event a Chromebook, case, or charger is lost or damaged beyond repair and deemed to be intentional, excessive, neglectful or student misuse, parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of replacement equipment.
Costs:
Chromebook - $365.00
Charger - $47.00
Case - $20.00
Other - Will be quoted by the Tech Department
Note: Final assessment of damage and fines are determined by the Technology Department.
Students are also responsible for the care of any loaners they use. Damage to loaners is subject to the same rules as permanently assigned Chromebooks.
In case of theft, parents/guardians are required to file a formal police report with the Madison Police Department.
Below are the direct links from the district website that pertains to Chromebook care and protocols followed for lost/damaged Chromebooks.
