On Tuesday May 21st, three students from the Madison Junior School who were selected as finalists for the Junior Solar Sprint challenge at New Providence High School hosted by Avenues in Motion competed against 65 teams from around NJ. Noku, Mary and Cathleen raced their solar car nicknamed "Hot Wheels" in a double elimination format on a beautiful sunny day. They did a wonderful job presenting their design and engineering systems to the judges at this competition.
During the competition these amazing students continually tested and adjusted their cars based on the evidence they collected through testing. In the end, making a last minute adjustment to their track connection system and the angle of the solar panel resulted in their ability to make it into the top 15 cars at the competition. All of MJS is proud of the hard work they put in at the competition and before arriving.
On Thursday May 30th, we welcomed back Jim Stroker for our culminating assembly. Coach Stroker invited 3 of our students up to talk about their MJS experiences this year and ways they have shown leadership. Leadership and decision making has been the focus with Coach Stroker this year and it is our hope our students walk away as stronger leaders for themselves and our building. We thank Coach Stroker for dedicating his time this year to be with our MJS community!
Following the assembly we all headed out to the back field for our Spring Pep Rally. We had the opportunity to recognize the MJSAO Baseball team along with hosting various competitive events. The events included hula hoop relay, water balloon toss and tug of war. We all celebrated at the end with ice pops provided by our PTO. Thank you to Ms. Siso, Ms. Kolinchak and the Student Council for organizing an awesome pep rally. It was a great time had by all! It is always great to bring our MJS community together.
This week 7th graders got to participate in their annual trip to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Students got to picnic in Central Park beneath a 3,500-year-old Egyptian Obelisk connected to both Cleopatra VII and Augustus Caesar! After the picnic, students got a chance to explore the museum's Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Medieval exhibits. While there, students presented research to their friends about famous artifacts from the museum's collection and competed in a scavenger hunt of the building's highlights. Some of the "extras" included the famous Washington's Crossing painting, the Death of Socrates painting, and a number of Vincent van Gogh masterpieces. It was a fantastic experience, and we can't wait to do it again next year!
On Wednesday night we came together as a community to celebrate our Music Department with our Spring band concert. Our students once again did an amazing job and the night was filled with beautiful music. Thank you to our Band Directors, Mr. Sabatino and Mr. Rossi for continuing to share their love of music with our students and helping them grow as musicians. Thank you to our families for the continued support of your children in their passion to follow their musical journey. Congratulations to our students and directors for a great year of music making!
The Special Olympics/PBA annual Torch Run happened on Friday morning. Congratulations to everyone who ran in the Madison leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics of New Jersey. They ran through the MJS parking lot and we had our whole school outside cheering them on!
On Friday June 7th, the 7th graders hosted their seventh annual Probability Carnival. MJS’s front lawn was covered with carnival games of all shapes and sizes. Spinners, plinko-boards, car-racing, and slot machines were just a few of the amazing games that students had created. A special thanks goes out to all of the families that came out to support this wonderful event! Fun was had by all!
In Madison, we utilize a 1:1 Chromebook model where all students (grades 6-12) receive a district owned Chromebook to utilize during the school day and at home. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is important that Chromebooks be maintained and handled in a responsible way. As we continue to move through the school year, we wanted to utilize this time as a reminder for our students and families about the importance of handling Chromebooks with care to prevent damage to the device. The district has expectations and protocols that are listed on the district website that we continue to follow at the building level.
We would like to highlight the specific section regarding lost and damaged chromebooks as a reminder to all parents and guardians:
In the event a Chromebook, case, or charger is lost or damaged beyond repair and deemed to be intentional, excessive, neglectful or student misuse, parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of replacement equipment.
Costs:
Chromebook - $365.00
Charger - $47.00
Case - $20.00
Other - Will be quoted by the Tech Department
Note: Final assessment of damage and fines are determined by the Technology Department.
Students are also responsible for the care of any loaners they use. Damage to loaners is subject to the same rules as permanently assigned Chromebooks.
In case of theft, parents/guardians are required to file a formal police report with the Madison Police Department.
Below are the direct links from the district website that pertains to Chromebook care and protocols followed for lost/damaged Chromebooks.
