Thank you to everyone who came out for our Annual Pickleball Tournament on Thursday! We had ten teams competing, but 8th graders Jake Myers and Logan Vitarelli ultimately took home the win. A big thank you goes to our Student Council advisors and members for planning a great event and making everything run smoothly. Thanks to everyone for playing, we’ll see you on the court next year!
This week our Culture Club had an interesting virtual visit with journalist Delgar Erdenesanaa, organized through the Pulitzer Center. Erdenesanaa, who specializes in oceanography and environmental issues, started by asking students if they had any questions. Culture Club members asked insightful questions about a range of topics. As a result of their curious questions, Erdenesanaa discussed how AI impacts journalism, shared about the cutest animals she has seen, and discussed journalism as a specific type of nonfiction writing. She emphasized the importance of highlighting underrepresented stories and talked about how individuals can make a positive impact on the environment. Through pictures, she showcased her recent project on rising ocean temperatures, detailing the research process and diverse voices she interviewed - from fishermen to artists using ocean materials. The visit wrapped up with a glimpse into daily life as a journalist, where no two days are the same. Culture Club is incredibly grateful to the Pulitzer Center facilitating this enriching experience for our club!
The Green Team has been hard at work getting ready for spring! This week, students planted seeds in mini greenhouses as the first step toward growing a small garden in the MJS courtyard. There was lots of excitement as members carefully chose seeds, prepared the soil, and set up their tiny greenhouses to help the seedlings get a strong start.
The club is also thrilled to share that the hydroponic garden towers they applied for through their MEF grant this fall have officially arrived! Students can’t wait to get them set up and start growing plants indoors using this innovative system. The towers will be up and running very soon, and the Green Team is excited to explore new ways of growing fresh veggies all year long.
Stay tuned for more green-growing updates! 🌱

MJS Celebration Corner highlights the wonderful work and accomplishments of our students and staff that occur outside of school. This could include athletic related activities/accomplishments, music or art related activities/accomplishments or any other accomplishments. Below are Celebrations from this past week.
We celebrate 7th Grade student, Oliver, who took the stage in not one, but two roles in Sellwood's production of Frozen Jr.! Oliver played Kristoff in Cast 1 and then stepped into the role of Arendale's King and mixed ensemble for Cast 2. The show ran over four performances from Friday, February 27th through Sunday, March 1st. Oliver along with several other MJS students who were part of the cast has been working hard since December to bring this production to life, and it showed. From start to finish, the cast performed with passion, humor, and a true embrace of their characters. Congratulations, Oliver, on a fantastic run! ⛄🎭
To be featured in our MJS Celebration Corner, please send a direct email to Mr. Perrone (perronef@madisonnjps.org) with the subject line, MJS Celebration Corner. In Madison, we utilize a 1:1 Chromebook model where all students (grades 6-12) receive a district owned Chromebook to utilize during the school day and at home. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is important that Chromebooks be maintained and handled in a responsible way. As we continue to move through the school year, we wanted to utilize this time as a reminder for our students and families about the importance of handling Chromebooks with care to prevent damage to the device. The district has expectations and protocols that are listed on the district website that we continue to follow at the building level.
We would like to highlight the specific section regarding lost and damaged chromebooks as a reminder to all parents and guardians:
In the event a Chromebook, case, or charger is lost or damaged beyond repair and deemed to be intentional, excessive, neglectful or student misuse, parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of replacement equipment.
Costs:
Chromebook (damaged beyond repair) - $365.00
Broken Screen - $90.00
Broken Keyboard - $70.00
Charger - $47.00
Case - $20.00
Other - Will be quoted by the Tech Department
Note: Final assessment of damage and fines are determined by the Technology Department.
Students are also responsible for the care of any loaners they use. Damage to loaners is subject to the same rules as permanently assigned Chromebooks.
In case of theft, parents/guardians are required to file a formal police report with the Madison Police Department.
Below are the direct links from the district website that pertains to Chromebook care and protocols followed for lost/damaged Chromebooks.
