The 7th Grade students in Mrs. Sanches and Mrs. DeFresco's Spanish and Italian classes got into groups by target language countries, created flags, and kicked off the Olympics with an opening ceremony 🇮🇹🇪🇸.
Then, they competed with their teams in Conjugation Relay Races, Vocabulary Curling (with real curling brooms provided by Mrs. Angelli), Lego Bobsled, Figure Skating (choreography to target language song about the Olympics), and an Olympian Wax Museum. The students had so much fun learning the target language and culture through the lens of this exciting current event. 🥇 Our MJS Olympians are proudly wearing their medals created in our STEM lab with the help of Ms. Barkin!

Culture Club celebrated Lunar New Year early by creating a colorful and informative bulletin board for MJS. Members decorated the board with festive designs and fun facts, including how to say “Happy New Year” in several different languages. We also made paper lanterns (which we added to the bulletin board), tried the classic cup-and-ball game, and enjoyed special red envelopes (filled with candy). It was a fun, hands-on way to learn about Lunar New Year traditions and share the celebration with the school community.
This February, MJS is celebrating American Heart Month with a staff Walk-a-Thon! Nine teams of four are competing to see who can walk the most steps, boosting wellness and community spirit. After the first week of competition, The Proclaimers (Mr. Martinez, Mrs. Marotta, Mrs. Tyburzy and Ms. Gibbons) came out on top of the leaderboard with a total of 377,742!

In Madison, we utilize a 1:1 Chromebook model where all students (grades 6-12) receive a district owned Chromebook to utilize during the school day and at home. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is important that Chromebooks be maintained and handled in a responsible way. As we continue to move through the school year, we wanted to utilize this time as a reminder for our students and families about the importance of handling Chromebooks with care to prevent damage to the device. The district has expectations and protocols that are listed on the district website that we continue to follow at the building level.
We would like to highlight the specific section regarding lost and damaged chromebooks as a reminder to all parents and guardians:
In the event a Chromebook, case, or charger is lost or damaged beyond repair and deemed to be intentional, excessive, neglectful or student misuse, parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of replacement equipment.
Costs:
Chromebook (damaged beyond repair) - $365.00
Broken Screen - $90.00
Broken Keyboard - $70.00
Charger - $47.00
Case - $20.00
Other - Will be quoted by the Tech Department
Note: Final assessment of damage and fines are determined by the Technology Department.
Students are also responsible for the care of any loaners they use. Damage to loaners is subject to the same rules as permanently assigned Chromebooks.
In case of theft, parents/guardians are required to file a formal police report with the Madison Police Department.
Below are the direct links from the district website that pertains to Chromebook care and protocols followed for lost/damaged Chromebooks.
