OUR GOAL:
“Strengthening our MJS Community through Human Connection”
In a world that prioritizes the 'virtual,' we are committing one day to the 'vital.' On April 14th, we will pause our digital lives to prioritize our collective identity. Our goal on this day is to rediscover the power of undivided attention, to hear the tone of a voice, to see the spark of an idea in a classmate's eyes, and to engage in the slow, deliberate process of analog creation. We will power down our screens to power up our empathy, our community, and our shared humanity."
WHAT DOES RESEARCH SAY:
Writing by hand may increase brain connectivity more than typing
A recent study found that writing by hand engages brain regions and neural connections much more extensively than typing on a keyboard, suggesting that the act of forming letters by hand may support memory and learning by increasing communication between areas involved in visual, sensory, and motor processing. The research, which used EEG to record brain activity in university students, showed that handwriting produced widespread brain connectivity patterns linked to memory formation, whereas typing did not stimulate those same networks to the same degree.

Our talented cast and crew truly brought the magic of Arendelle to life during our production of Frozen Jr. last weekend. It was wonderful to see so many families, friends, and community members in the audience cheering on our stars. Congratulations to the cast and crew for a fantastic performance. A production of this magnitude doesn't just happen by magic—it takes a dedicated creative team to lead the way. We want to extend a special thank you to our Director: Ms. Julia Marra, Assistant Director: Ms. Keira Chirino, Artistic Design: Ms. Melina Cafaro and Set Design: Ms. Ellie Barkin-Baron.
On Tuesday we welcomed artist, Patrick Dunning to MJS for this whole school assembly. The show was about an artwork in progress that has multiple layers that got revealed on stage. Patrick Dunning used projection on screen with live commentary and pieces of the artwork that react to different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as x-rays, ultraviolet light and infrared. It was visually rich with color, form, sound and special effects. The arc of the story is about life, diversity and how we are all connected in this world, which connects directly to our MJSONE Theme. A huge thank you to the Madison Education Foundation, MJS PTO, and Madison Music and Arts Association! This wonderful whole-school assembly was made possible through their collaborative funding and shared commitment to enriching our students' experiences.
At the end of the show our MJS staff had the opportunity to add their signature to a small part of this large masterpiece!
This week, the 7th Grade Team brought Ancient Egypt to life by beginning our orange mummification project! Following our unit on Egyptian history, students are applying their knowledge of the mummification process through this engaging, hands-on activity. It’s an annual favorite for both students and staff, bridging the gap between historical theory, scientific practice and fun. Our oranges will be ready in 35 days!
Seventh grade students celebrated the culmination of their month-long IXL Skills Smackdown this week! From mid-February through mid-March, students completed practice exercises focused on grammar and mechanics, competing at both the team and class levels. Top winners for each class enjoyed a pizza party. We are so grateful to the MJS PTO for making this recognition event possible!

In Madison, we utilize a 1:1 Chromebook model where all students (grades 6-12) receive a district owned Chromebook to utilize during the school day and at home. While there is no cost for the use of the Chromebook, it is important that Chromebooks be maintained and handled in a responsible way. As we continue to move through the school year, we wanted to utilize this time as a reminder for our students and families about the importance of handling Chromebooks with care to prevent damage to the device. The district has expectations and protocols that are listed on the district website that we continue to follow at the building level.
We would like to highlight the specific section regarding lost and damaged chromebooks as a reminder to all parents and guardians:
In the event a Chromebook, case, or charger is lost or damaged beyond repair and deemed to be intentional, excessive, neglectful or student misuse, parents/guardians are responsible for paying the cost of replacement equipment.
Costs:
Chromebook (damaged beyond repair) - $365.00
Broken Screen - $90.00
Broken Keyboard - $70.00
Charger - $47.00
Case - $20.00
Other - Will be quoted by the Tech Department
Note: Final assessment of damage and fines are determined by the Technology Department.
Students are also responsible for the care of any loaners they use. Damage to loaners is subject to the same rules as permanently assigned Chromebooks.
In case of theft, parents/guardians are required to file a formal police report with the Madison Police Department.
Below are the direct links from the district website that pertains to Chromebook care and protocols followed for lost/damaged Chromebooks.
