Tom Gilbert (Athlete - 2001)

Tom was a standout hockey and baseball player at Jefferson High School.  He lettered in hockey his sophomore, junior, and senior years, and was captain his senior year.  He was All Conference his junior and senior year and was a finalist for Mr. Hockey in 2001.  He also lettered in baseball his junior and senior years and was captain his senior year.  He was All Conference his senior year and was elected to play in the Lions All Star game.  Tom was named Jefferson's Male Athlete of the Year in 2001.  In 2002, Tom played junior hockey for the Chicago Steel and accepted a scholarship to play hockey at the University of Wisconsin, where he played from 2002 - 2006.  He was named MVP his junior year in college and in his senior year Tom was elected First Team WCHA, WCHA All Academic Team, NCAA Championship All Tournament Team, and All American.  He scored the winning goal in the 2006 NCAA Championship game vs. Boston College.  In 2007, Tom signed a pro contract with the Edmonton Oilers.  In 2008 Tom set an Oiler record for goals scored by a rookie defenseman and was named to the NHL All Rookie team.  Tom played for the U.S. National Hockey Team in the 2007-08 World Tournament.
