Stan Sutter

Stanley F. Sutter

For over 30 years, Stan Sutter taught art to students in the Bloomington Public Schools.  Among his many accomplishments and successes at Jefferson High School, Stan’s favorite was planning and supervising the building of a photography darkroom and starting a highly successful photography program.  Many of his students from that program have gone on to become professionally involved in photography or to excel as amateurs.   Students remember him for his honest and open approach to teaching as well as his sense of humor and love of jazz.

Born in 1939 in Ames, Iowa, Stan received a BA from Iowa State Teacher’s College and an MFA from the University of Minnesota in 1965.  He has had exhibits and one man shows throughout the Midwest, and has paintings and drawings in private collections and museums.  A true Renaissance man, Stan continues to paint, design and build furniture, sketch and occasionally play his trumpet, all in an effort to keep his creative muses content.

Stan began his teaching career as a teacher of college students, but has taught at all levels – from kindergarten to college and even adult learners.  In his many years of teaching, he says he has never met a child or person who didn’t have artistic potential at some level. It is his belief that his most important contribution in the Bloomington schools was positively impacting the lives of many students to not only appreciate art, but to do art on either an amateur or professional basis.  He views this expression of creativity as vital to success in every field and aspect of life.
