Events and To-Dos FAQs

What is the difference between an Event and a To-Do?

To-Dos are important steps/tasks, such as Fill out Your FAFSA or Register for Courses, that a student should take to onboard, progress, and eventually graduate. Events are specific date or time-frame associated goings-on that students should attend to get to the end goal of graduation.

Can a student search for an Event or a To-Do?

No, a student does not have the ability to search for either Events or To-Dos, but they can use the filter to see today's, completed, overdue or hidden Events and To-Dos.

How often do Events appear?

The timing of Events is configured by HCC's Content Administrator using EAB’s Content Administration Tool. Contact navigate@hcc.edu if you have questions/requests regarding the timing of events.

How does staff know which To-Dos a student has completed?

Staff members with permissions to view the Student Profile within Navigate can see all To-Dos, Events, and Tips. However, whether or not a student has completed those tasks is completely self-reported by the student. If a student has completed a To-Do but has not checked it off in their application, the To-Do still displays as needing to be completed. There is no way for the application to know if a student has in fact completed a task unless the student consistently interacts with the app and marks it as such.

We can track complete of certain events that would be a To-Do for our students in Banner. (ex: attendance at Orientation.) Can this be marked as complete for a student?

Yes, if you have workflows to log attributes or flags in Banner that students have completed tasks that can be linked to particular To-Dos, we can explore an auto-complete action to automatically mark a To-Do as complete for a student. Reach out to the HCC Navigate team at navigate@hcc.edu about this option.

If I create To-Dos for a specific cohort (in this example, a category of students with a particular admit status), is the To-Do dynamic?

For example, once the student no longer has that admit status and, thus, falls out of the category, does the To-Do delete from their path automatically or will the student still need to mark the To-Do as complete for it to disappear from the path?

To-Dos are dynamic and should delete from the student path automatically in the case outlined above.
