The David Douglas High School girls swim team was crowned the Mt. Hood Conference champions on Feb. 9 during the state championship meet at the David Douglas Aquatic Center with a significant gap between second place with Sam Barlow High School, 481-415.

Both the boys and girls team came out with many victories. Freshman Ariya Abdullah was announced as the Mt. Hood Conference female swimmer of the meet. Abdullah raced in the 50 meter (23.71) and 100 meter freestyle (53.39) and her times made David Douglas swim history: she secured first place in both events and will be heading to state.

The girls swim team took the lead in the 200 yard medley relay. Sophomore Averyl Pena, junior Kim Nguyen, junior Alyssa Siripatrapa, and sophomore Ja'lan Abdullah took first place with a time of 1:55.64. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, Ja'lan Abdullah, Nguyen, junior Elliott Swanson, and Ariya Abdullah won first place with a time of 1:42.05. Siripatrapa, Swanson, junior Zoe Burks, and Ariya Abdullah earned second place in the 400 yard freestyle relay, falling 6.12 seconds behind Barlow with a time of 3:49.63. All swimmers who partook in these relays will be heading to state.

Select swimmers who placed second or third have a chance to wildcard in the state meet. Siripatrapa, who placed second in the 200 yard individual medley with 2:18.02 and in the 100 yard butterfly with 1:00.54, is one of the select swimmers. Another swimmer with a chance to wildcard is Swanson, who won second place in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.69. Nguyen also has the opportunity to wildcard, after earning third place in the 50 yard freestyle at 25.75 and second place in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.32.
