Artists win Scholastic and MHCC art awards

    David Douglas High School artists competed recently in the Scholastic and The Mount Hood Community College 2024 High School Art Show. 

     Philip Feytser, Valeria Del Valle De Los Santos, Mariah Howard, Kaz Trepanier, An Hoang and Dieu Nguyen all won honors. 

     Senior Valeria Del Valle De Los Santos won a gold key award in painting for her artwork “Ximena” and an honorable mention in digital photography with her piece “Stare” at the Scholastic Art Awards. “For this oil on canvas work,” stated Del Valle De Los Santos, “I initially made it as a practice piece for rendering different values on skin.” She placed second in the MHCC art show for technical skill.

     Senior Mariah Howard won a silver Key in mixed Media with her artwork “Thermal Fibers.” “Exploring a new form of fiber art has been eye-opening and excites me to experiment more with this new art style,” Howard said. In the MHCC art show, she also won first place for Originality. 

     “Mariah is a super creative and expressive artist with an eye for elegant and stylish design,” said art teacher Maria Galati. “She excels at engineering her artworks, with attention to detail and a serious commitment to craft.  She generously gives of her time to help make our studio run, too!   She is a powerhouse!”

     Kaz Trepanier won one silver key in digital art for her artwork “The Disconnection Of Self.”

      Senior Philip Feytser won first place in the MHCC for Emergence of Personal Vision/Voice with his piece “High School Lunch.” “I’m graduating high school this year and wanted to capture the feeling of lunch at school,” stated Feytser. “Lunch is one of my favorite times during school.”

     Sophomore Dieu Nguyen was placed right behind Philip for her piece “A Memoire Of Vietnam.” Nguyen stated, “A Memoire of Vietnam is a piece of appreciation I want to give to my culture. It showcases the beauty of the people and the land. Each line is drawn to resemble things significant in Vietnamese culture, such as the banana tree, which is often used during ceremonies. “

     Seniors Troy Hockett (state champ), Lindsey Medina, and An Hoang received honorable mentions.
