Content Aware Fill

Content Aware Fill is a feature in Adobe Photoshop CC that enables a user to delete content from an image and rebuild the pixels that would have been behind the deleted object(s).

In the image above (LEFT), I captured the lighthouse at Geneva-on-the-Lake, OH and in the image on the right deleted the lighthouse and some of the birds in the sky.

Grade 3-5

OBJECTIVE:

  • Grade 5-7: The Student will remove an object from background Adobe Photoshop CC tools.
  • Grade 8-12: The student will remove an object from background Adobe Photoshop CC tools and move an object within an image.


LEARNING TARGETS:

  • I can use the Content Aware Fill command to replace an object.


ACTIVITIES:

  1. Watch the YouTube video linked at the bottom of this page.
  2. Open Adobe Photoshop CC
  3. File>Open>Navigate to your target image (NOTE: You may need to download an image from Lesnansky's Control Center Image Library or from an email attachment)
  4. Select the Lasso Tool on the Toolbar
  5. Select the object that you want to remove by circling the object with the lasso (use the mouse)
  6. Press the Delete key
  7. On the Dialog Box Window verify that you have Content Aware Fill>Click OK
  8. The object will disappear!
  9. CHALLENGE: Select an object then press CTRL+C to copy the object.
  10. Now Use Content Aware Fill to remove the object
  11. When done press CTRL+V to paste the object back into place. (NOTE: The object will now be on a separate layer and can be moved, resized or skewed as you like)
  12. File>Save As>Navigate to the destination drive
    1. PSD (Photoshop Document) will only be readable in Adobe Photoshop and is a "soft" file that you intend to further edit or adjust. This file will only be readable by an Adobe Photoshop program.
    2. JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a "hard" file that you no longer intend to edit but can use with other programs or applications (i.e. Microsoft Office, web uploads, prints, etc.)
  13. Now go to my Flickr Site OR my Google Photos.
  14. Find an image that you think you can use these two (2) skills.
  15. Download the image and
    1. Use Content Aware Fill to delete something
    2. Use Select, Copy and Content Aware Fill to move something.
  16. Save the files as JPG images
    1. lastname (original)
    2. lastname (derivative)
  17. Upload both files to Google Classroom.


SUBMITTED WORK:

  • When you have completed the assignment, view the Check-Out Sheet (posted below), make a copy of the sheet and follow the directions for printing the sheet in Room 408 or Room 408A.


GRADING CRITERIA:

  • The replaced item must be a clean selection and replacement. Any evidence of the original left in the edited file will be cause for a deduction
  • The moved item also must be clean and the new image should look authentic


LATE WORK/MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENT:

  • If you are absent from school or do not complete the assignment on time, you must print your work to the printer labeled PROD LAB 408. (NOTE: A point deduction may be enforced for late work not due to an excused absence.)
