Students will wrap up the Horror unit by writing another comparison paragraph. They will be demonstrating that they can write a concise constructed response focusing on one feature of the horror genre and which version used it better.

Specific topics I suggest for comparison (Choose ONE)

Focus: How does each version use these to create suspense?

1. Writer’s craft (choices): How is the story told differently in the movie?

2. Sequence of events: How does the movie use flashback?

3. Imagery: How does each appeal to the five sense?

4. Writer’s craft: Which one uses foreshadowing better?

5. Search for forbidden knowledge: Does one version make you scream, “Stop”?

Read these example paragraphs from The Tell Tale Heart as examples of good writing.

Here is the link for the movie so you can use it as a reference.

Here a copy of the story.

QUIZ: QUIZ Unit 1-6

The goal of the two paragraphs was two fold. Students were to demonstrate their understanding of the themes from the story and the movie. Second, I wanted to give students practice writing constructed responses. The January benchmark test showed me that students need more practice citing text from the pieces when they write. Students were given specific instructions for the organization of these paragraphs. If they followed the instructions, they should get a good grade.

  1. Finish your Monkey's Paw paragraph and turn in.
  2. Finish the paragraph on the movie we watched.
    1. The topic sentence is easy: The conditions in America during the 1800’s created the need for abolitionists like Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and John Brown. (PICK ONE)
  3. Begin researching your abolitionist
    1. Here is the assignment
    2. Here is the person you will be researching and the order you will present.
    3. Due around February 15th (I will finalize soon.)
