1. Warm-up:
Inferencing 6-1
Enter Synonyms and Antonyms Unit 10
Review the Answers
2. Present Mood of Drummer Boy
3. Begin the rewrite of Drummer Boy but make it the night after his first day of battle.
- Students should now have some background about what battles were like during the Civil War.
- Students will bring that knowledge to their close reading of two short stories to analyze how the writers created mood through setting, imagery, symbols, and allusions.
- Go through the images in the original story.
- Follow the basic plot of the original.
- Change the imagery to reflect the changed mood of the evening, the drummer boy, and the General.
- For example, does he feel closer to seeing his family again?
- Do you focus on the falling blossoms?
- Do you allude to different famous events or people?
Whole Group Lesson
Small Group work and/or Lesson Concept clarification.
In groups, students will discuss and later present how changes in setting, imagery, symbols, and allusions would create a different mood.

Homework
I assigned a constructed response on Google Classroom which is due by Monday.
It is more of a practice assignment.
I want them to see how to organize a constructed response which focuses on mood.
These are the Common Core Standards addressed throughout Historical Fiction literature study.
CC.8.R.L.2 Key Ideas and Details: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters,setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text.
CC.8.R.I.3 Key Ideas and Details: Analyze how a text makes connections among and distinctions between individuals, ideas, or events (e.g., through comparisons, analogies, or categories).
CC.8.R.I.4 Craft and Structure: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts.

Today’s Agenda
1. Warm-up:
Inferencing 6-1
2. Review Mood, Setting, Imagery, Symbol, and Allusion. Students should understand how these create the mood in The Drummer Boy of Shiloh.
3. Continue a close read of Drummer Boy.
4. Students have a sheet that divides the story up every ten lines. They are to jot down ALL the imagery they can find so we can determine the mood.
5. Students will take a multiple choice test on the story which requires knowing the events of the story and how to identify the mood.
- Students should now have some background about what battles were like during the Civil War.
- Students will bring that knowledge to their close reading of "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" to analyze how the writers created mood through setting, imagery, symbols, and allusions.
Whole Group Lesson
Right now it is important that we practice this skill together. The writer's style is beautiful but challenging.
