Learning Objectives:

Today’s Agenda

Students will demonstrate the skills they have learned from studying memoir and imagery from The Latehomecomer. This benchmark test requires they pay close attention and evaluate each response. There are only 18 questions! This WILL count as a grade.

Students will practice common, grade-appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word (e.g., precede, recede, secede).

1. Warm-up: Comprehension- #18 Chinese

2. Vocab: Review pages 45 and 46. Do page 49.

3. Review benchmark test #2 closely

4. A Place to Call Home: Read page 50 first. Then read the piece. Answer the questions.

5. What are the challenges and adjustments you learned in this selection?

(We will be writing the performance task next week!)

Performance Task: At the end of this collection students will write an expository essay focusing on the challenges immigrants face and the adjustments immigrants make.

Students will have explored the impact the author's use of figurative language has on conveying the message. (What is the message?)

3. Review Figurative Language sheet

4. Watch the two close read videos

5. Reread The Latehomecomer examining the figurative language using this sheet.

6. Begin Text Features in A Place to Call Home informational text.
