Looking at the Common Core Standards and at the rubric from our book, and then looking at the students' bibliographies, I see that I must take some time to teach the students how to use easybib.com.

CC.8.W.8 Research to Build and Present Knowledge: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

Most students have bibliographies that look like this:

    1. http://www.biography.com/people/solomon-northup-21333433
    2. http://www.biography.com/people/cassius-marcellus-clay-9250370
    3. https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=solomon+northup&tbm=bks
    4. https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#tbm=bks&q=cassius+marcellus+clay
    5. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_Northup
  1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassius_Marcellus_Clay_(politician)

The information in these presentations has been gathered from various sources, not from the students' heads!

A bibliography is supposed to be able to tell us specific information:

  • Where can I find the original information?
  • Who wrote the original information?
  • What was the name of the book or article?

This is how the bibliography should look:

"Cassius Marcellus Clay Biography." Bio.com. A&E Networks Television, n.d. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

"Cassius Marcellus Clay (politician)." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, n.d. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

Richardson, Edward. "Cassius Marcellus Clay." Google Books. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 Feb. 2016

"Solomon Northup Biography." Bio.com. A&E Networks Television, n.d. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

"Solomon Northup." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, n.d. Web. 22 Feb. 2016.

Notice the following:

  • It is alphabetical by the first item- author's name or article title.
  • Notice there are no numbers.
  • Now we see who wrote the original information.
  • We now see where the information is located if we want to look up more.
    • Notice that the URL is not displayed.
    • Easybib has an option to leave it out.
    • Some URL's are huge and ugly.
    • Put in the URL if the information could not be found without it.
