Current Assignment: Debates (Due March 28!)

Choose your debate topic (here)

Things to keep in mind as you choose a topic:

    • You will be scored on the quality of your reasons.
    • Here is the organizer the students will use as a Google Doc.
      • You need reasons that are factual, not just your personal opinions.
      • You will need to cite the sources of your facts.
    • You will be scored by your classmates and me.
      • If your reasons are lame, we will score you lower!
      • Are BOTH of you comfortable with the topic?
    • Only the winner gets the A (unless you make a great visual).

Have a strong intro.

Have three well explained supports for your claim and cite sources.

Be prepared to rebut your opponent's supports.

Have good organization.

Have a visual of some sort.

Have good eye contact.

Wrap up with a strong conclusion.

Only the winner can get an A... unless you use visuals which give you extra points.

Argumentative Essay (Due April 7)

After students have completed their debates, they are expected to write an essay.

The essay will be formatted just like the debate.

Students will have brainstormed for the debate, so they should be experts on their position.

Students will have participated in the debate, so they will know the counterclaims and how to rebut them.

The essay should cite sources.

The essay should have a bibliography.

Students should use this Google Doc for their final draft of the argumentative essay:

The goal for today is to read, read, read!!!

Try NewsELA. They they allow you to change the reading level of the articles.

You want to get a good feeling for your position first.

But as you read, you should also be taking notes on your opponent's position.

Use the links in yellow at the top of the page.

We will research for 30 minutes QUIETLY!

Then you will come together with your opponent to share your results.

Requirements for Lesson Planning

Small Groups: Students will be working in pairs on their debates. There will be lots of opportunities for me to sit down with students and explore their progress.
