Objective: Students read Bonne Annee yesterday, but they could not determine the theme. They mostly said it was a story about a man who wanted to return to Haiti. WRONG! They said there was this evil ruler and his son keeping the writer from returning. YES, but that is not the theme.

The goal for today is to have students analyze HOW the personal narrative is written. What facts, opinions, and anecdotes did the writer include. What details from his life did he include?

Students should be able to chunk the parts of the story and then see the whole.

From those chunks, they should see the theme.

Warm-up:

Tell Me Something Good

#20 Inferencing Sections 2 & 3 enter vocabulary homework

Lesson:

1. Review what students should have for paragraphs 1-6. Here is what I highlighted.

We will be using highlighters to identify these qualities of the personal narrative.

Red = Opinion/The way the writer feels

Blue= Facts

Yellow= Short, important sentences which might reveal the theme

Green= Identify the two anecdotes.

2. Reread the story in your group section by section. Summarize each paragraph.

Today, you should really be looking for the short, yellow sentences.

There are many times where the narrator states something he realized.

There are many sentences where he states an observation.

3. What do you think the theme is now?

Fill out this form.

4. Then go to Clever.com , login, then go to vocabulary.com.

I want you to do the My Favorite Chaperone set. I am looking for mastery.
