Parentally Placed in Private School

We recognize the need to create a district-wide system for communicating with parentally placed, private school families who have declined special education services for the current school year.

Each year, the school district must provide written notice that:

(a) the district stands ready to provide special education and related services if the child is re-enrolled in the district; and

(b) offers a service plan meeting to consider continuation of special education and related services to the child with a disability in conjunction with private schooling.

This written notice must be provided annually as long as the child:

  • remains eligible for special education;

  • is exempt from compulsory school attendance as a private schooled student; and

  • is not receiving special education and related services from the district

The deadline for this notification process will be October 1st of each school year. If you are notified after October 1st of a new parentally placed, private school student, this notice should be sent home immediately and then again each October 1st. Please note the process described above contains no additional paperwork. Prior Written Notice should be distributed to parents, private school/student cum file, and Student Services.

Parentally placed, private school children who are eligible for special education must also be reevaluated at least every three years in the same manner as children with disabilities in public school. If the student’s three-year eligibility is due within a 12 month period, an evaluation planning meeting (which includes the parent and private school teacher) should also be scheduled.
