Measurable Post-Secondary Goal
A post secondary goal are those goals that a young adult hopes to achieve after leaving high school. The post-secondary goal must be based upon age-appropriate transition assessments. A measurable post secondary goal provides outcome, not just a process for the student and must counted, tabulated or observed.
Goals are required in:
1. Training:
On the Job training
Home based or center based program training
Continuing education classes
Volunteer Activities or Service Projects
Example 1:
Three months after high school, John will enroll in courses at PCC college.
This goal is compliant for the following reasons:
Participation in postsecondary education is the focus of this goal
Enrollment at a community college can be observed
The expectation of the behavior is explicit, since John enrolls at the community college or he does not
Enrollment at a community college occurs after graduation
Example 2:
Three months after high school John will participate in a training to improve his work skills in a job at a grocery store.
This goal is compliant for the following reasons:
On the Job training is the focus of this goal
Participation in the training can be observed
Training will occur after high school
The goal identifies an outcome
Education:
4 year college or university
2 year community college,
technical college less than 2 year vocational or technical school
Short term educational or employment training (i.e. Job Corps)
High school completion document (i.e. GED)
AmeriCorps
Example 1:
Three months after high school John will attend a community college and study Child Development.
This goal is compliant for the following reasons:

Competitive employment
Military
Self-employed
Family Business
Supported employment
Examples that are complaint:
Three months after high school John will work on-campus part time while attending college.
Three months after leaving high school will have a career in the field of early childhood education
Three months after leaving high school John will have a job as a welder
Three months after leaving high school John will work in retail
These are complaint for the following reasons:

Attaining a job can be observed
4. Independent Living (if applicable):
Money Management
Grocery Shopping
Housekeeping
Meal preparation
Transportation
Recreation
Examples that are complaint:
Three months after high school John will utilize public transportation monthly
Three months after high school John will independently prepare lunch daily
Three months after high school John will play soccer in a recreational soccer league
Three months after high school John will effectively utilize an augmentative communication device to obtain his needs int he community and at home.
Three months after high school John will continue to live with his parents and participate in his daily care routines to the maximum extend possible
These are complaint for the following reasons:
Independent living is the focus of the goal
All tasks can be observed
All goals happen after high school
