8 - no good deed

July 25, 2012: The mysterious death of business woman Marta del Sol (actually imposter Verónica Martínez, played by Leonor Varela) sent her ex-lover and ex-partner in crime John Ross Ewing III straight to prison, in the first murder case of the TNT´s "Dallas" (but not the last, at all: in the next episode, another minor character bit the dust: Tommy Sutter, played by Callard Harris). Mafioso Vicente Cano ("24"´s Carlos Bernard) had John Ross beaten in jail after Chris refused to sell him the methane project, Sue Ellen made a desperate J.R.-like move to save her son that would cost her the governor seat, J.R. returned to Southfork (after Larry Hagman´s last health scare before his death the following year) and Tommy revealed not only that he and Rebecca (Julie Gonzalo) were closer than simply brother and sister, but also that the latter was also a little scheming machine whose real identity was hinted by the show´s show-runner prior to its premiere: No dear fans, the name choice of Rebecca is NO coincidence. How could she be so naïve? One of the best (and sadly last) scenes between characters J.R. and Bobby, though we should better say actors Larry and Patrick, is about brotherly love, cancer, and the fact that "nobody lives forever".

El 5 de agosto de 2012, la misteriosa muerte de la ejecutiva Marta del Sol (en realidad una impostora llamada Verónica Martínez e interpretada por Leonor Varela) enviaba a su ex amante y ex cómplice John Ross Ewing III directo a prisión en el primer caso de asesinato de la nueva "Dallas" (que no el último ni mucho menos: en el episodio siguiente, otro secundario mordía el polvo: Tommy Sutter, a cargo del actor Callard Harris). El mafioso Vicente Cano (el Carlos Bernard de "24") ordenaba que le dieran a John Ross una paliza en la cárcel después de que Chris se negara a venderle el proyecto del metano; Sue Ellen realizaba un desesperado movimiento a lo J.R. para salvar a su hijo que le costaría el puesto de gobernadora, J.R. regresaba a Southfork (después de la última crisis de Larry Hagman antes de su muerte ocurrida el año siguiente) y Tommy no sólo revelaba que él y Rebecca (Julie Gonzalo) eran algo más que hermanos, sino que ésta era además una pequeña intrigante cuya verdadera identidad ya había sido insinuada por la creadora de la serie antes de su mismo estreno: No, queridos fans, el nombre de Rebecca NO es una coincidencia. ¿Cómo pudo ser tan ingenua? Una de las mejores (y tristemente, también últimas) escenas entre los personajes de J.R. y Bobby, aunque tal vez sería mejor decir entre los actores Larry y Patrick, trata del cariño fraternal, el cáncer, y el hecho de que "nadie vive eternamente".

Wow what an ending! I loved this eppi! I also was sure that "Sis" was said with sarcasm! Will Rebecca shoot Tommy in the cliffhanger? I keep thinking that their storyline is very knotsian!! I found the preview a little disappointing. I guess they don´t wanna give too much away, if anything. Sue Ellen is having regrets already, the killer is at large (waiting for the cliffhanger?) and the letter...what the hell was it? I didn´t quite understand what Chris told Rebecca...The family is gathering finally. Good. But I guess that Harris has more chances to become next year´s villain than Vicente del Peli-Cano!! (Is Bernard allergic to shaving like in 24?) Gotta love that little black-and-white horse on the Southfork small table. I vote him for candidate of successor of the porcelain dog!! Nice shot of John Ross kissing Elena at Southfork!! Made me think of Hitchcock´s Vertigo! I hope that Sue Ellen´s fur coat is synthetic otherwise her election will be doomed! But it was great to see her with shoulderpads again!!

All in all, a good episode, but the methane thing still is a very lame plot device...

¡Menudo final...! Este episodio me ha encantado. A mí también me pareció que eso de "hermanita" lo había dicho (Tommy) con sarcasmo. ¿Disparará Rebecca contra Tommy en el cliffhanger? Sigo pensando que esta trama es muy del estilo de Knots Landing. El avance me pareció un poco decepcionante. Supongo que no han querido adelantar acontecimientos...Sue Ellen ya tiene remordimientos, el asesino sigue en libertad (¿hasta el final de la temporada?) y esa carta...¿qué diablos era? No entendí muy bien lo que Chris le dijo a Rebecca...Por fin la familia se une, eso es bueno, pero me imagino que Harris tiene más posibilidades de convertirse en el malvado del año que viene que "Vicente del Pelí-Cano"...! (¿Tiene Bernard alguna alergia que le impide afeitarse, como en 24?) Me encanta ese caballito blanco y negro que tienen sobre la mesita de Southfork. Le doy mi voto para suceder al perro de porcelana...Bonito plano del beso de John Ross y Elena en Southfork: me hizo pensar en el Vértigo de Hitchcock. Espero que el abrigo de Sue Ellen sea de piel sintética o sus elecciones estarán condenadas. Pero fue genial volverla a ver llevando hombreras...En resumen, un buen episodio, aunque lo del metano sigue siendo un recurso argumental bastante cutre...
