Team handicap competition.
Shiyi Ling A won the 2018 Summer League, beating Shiyi Ling C 5.5 - 4.5 in a very close final, only clinching the match in the doubles.
Final: Shiyi Ling A 5.5 (Mikey Arnold 1-2, Paul Greenwood 1.5-1.5, Tom Thorp 2-1, Doubles 1-0) Shiyi Ling C 4.5 (James Atkins 3-0, Ryan Hood 0-3, Arthur Sorley 1.5-1.5, Doubles 0-1)
It was a match of top quality table tennis, demonstrating that the future of York's table tennis is in good youthful hands. All matches were hard fought, with little in it regardless of scores. Ryan lost two games by 3 points and 1 point against Mikey and Paul respectively; Arthur drew against Paul and was just pipped by 1 point to the win by Tom. The deciding doubles was contested by Mikey Arnold/Tom Thorp vs Ryan Hood/Arthur Sorley. James Atkins was man-of-the-match with a maximum 3 wins but ended up on the losing team.
Semi-finals:
Wigginton & Haxby A 4.5 (Steve Cameron, Paul Halmshaw, Andrew Male) Shiyi Ling A 5.5 (Mikey Arnold, Paul Greenwood, Tom Thorp)
Wigginton & Haxby B 4 (Chris Bauer, Nathan Fairburn, Ian Oxborough) Shiyi Ling C 6 (James Atkins, Ryan Hood, Arthur Sorley)
The semi-finals were fiercely contested by all teams with both Shiyi Ling teams just winning out against the Wigginton & Haxby teams.
Shiyi Ling C beat W&H B 6-4, the pivotal games being James Atkins winning two games by 1 point after giving an advantage of 30 points in the game and Arthur Sorley beating Chris Bauer in game 8 giving him a 10 start but beating him well after Chris had played so strongly against Ryan Hood and James. Nathan Fairburn played extremely well especially against James and at age 17 will be one to watch
Shiyi Ling A beat W&H A 5.5-4.5, all square going into the doubles with Shiyi Ling winning the game by 2 points. Steve Cameron anchored W&H's efforts with 2.5 points in the match, two matches for Paul Halmshaw landing on the wrong side 1 and 2 point differences, which could have swung it firmly in W&H's favour and Andrew Male chipping in with a good 5 point difference win over Mikey Arnold.
Thanks to Mike Dinsdale for organising the competition.
