Coneysthorpe ‘A’ are still celebrating after winning the York & District League division one championship for the first time in the club’s history. They remained undefeated throughout the season and pipped big rivals Sessions ‘A’ by just four points in a thrilling contest to lift the title. Coneysthorpe won 26 and drew one of their 27 matches, with 230 sets for and 40 against. Sessions won 24, drew one and lost two but remained close with 226 sets won and 44 lost. Coneysthorpe, who were already members of the Ryedale Table Tennis League, joined the York & District League in the mid-1970s, with their subsequent development owing much to the enthusiasm and inspiration of founder the late Terry Adams. At one time Coneysthorpe had three teams in the York & District League, with ‘A’ and ‘B’ sides playing at Swinton Reading Rooms and the ‘C’ team at Coneysthorpe Village Hall. The ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams remain and, despite playing at Swinton, keep the Coneysthorpe name. Both are in division one. Coneysthorpe ‘A’s successful players are Scarborough-based duo Martin Lowe, who won 72 of his 75 sets, and Ashley Hodgson, who won 71 of 78, along with Norton’s Joel Wright, who won 49 of 69.
