The York One Star, presented by York & District Table Tennis Association, was held at Railway Institute on Saturday 24th November. This is the second year the event has been held, following the success of the 2017 tournament. Entries were up significantly on last year, attracting players from across the north of England and beyond, so 12 tables were needed rather than the usual 10. Thanks to Richard Crowther and his team from the York Association for organizing the tournament, and to Richard Hudson (Hull) for refereeing.

York players’ performances

Juniors’ Singles: Will Whattam (Topspin York) lost to Dave Gofton and Arthur Sorley (Shiyi Ling) lost to Adam Webster in the quarter-finals.

Ladies’ Singles: No York entrants.

Veteran’s Singles: No York player made it out of the groups into the knock-out stage.

Men’s Singles: Joe Wright (Topspin York) and Aidan Ranftler (Clarence TTC) made it to the quarter-finals.

Prize Band A Singles: Joe Wright, Filip Wojtkowiak (York RI) and James Atkins (Topspin York) all made it to the quarter-finals while Arthur Sorley (Shiyi Ling) qualified for Band A and won his first round match against Martin Brown (University) making the last 16 only having to concede his match due to a prior family engagement.

Prize Band B Singles: Nathan Taylor (Topspin York) was runner-up to Steve Brunskill, with Ben Lockyer (Shiyi Ling) losing to Nathan in the semi-finals.

Prize Band B Singles: Mikey Arnold (Shiyi Ling) was runner-up to Colin Hamilton.
