The York Closed Table Tennis Championships were held on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th January 2009 at the Railway Institute Gymnasium.
Richard Moss (Sessions) and Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) contested the Men's Singles final for the fifth successive year, Lowe having won the previous four. This time Moss took the title in another thrilling contest full of high class table tennis. Moss started the first set strongly, going into an 8-3 lead, but Lowe came back to win it 13-11. Moss dominated the next two, taking them 11-8 and 11-5, but then Lowe ran away with the fourth by 11-4 to take the match into a fifth and deciding set. Neither player took a two-point lead until Moss went 8-6 up. Lowe pulled back to 8-8 before Moss took the next two to give himself two match points. Lowe saved the first but Moss took the next to win 11-9. Moss has now won the title four times. His first was in 2002 when he was the youngest ever winner.
Moss had beaten un-seeded Richard Crowther (York RI) in straight sets in his semi-final while Lowe had to come back from two sets down to defeat third seed Mick Wilcockson (Sessions) in his semi-final. Crowther had put out sixth seed Joel Wright (Coneysthorpe) in the quarter-finals and also beat third seed Wilcockson in the group stages.
There is a new name on the Ladies' Singles trophy as Jane Cohen (York RI) defeated Rebecca George (Coneysthorpe) by three sets to one in the final. They shared the first two sets before Cohen took the next two by 11-5 and 11-9. Rebecca gained some consolation by taking the Junior Singles title. She beat Luke Blackburn (York RI) in straight sets in the final.
Jane took two further titles. She teamed up with club-mate Anne Barnard to take the Ladies' Doubles in straight sets against Rebecca George and Andrea Potter (Holgate WMC), and with Nathan Horsley (Sessions) to win the Mixed Doubles final against Marian Broadbent (BT) and Jon Wooldridge (Bootham) in a very tight match by three sets to two, having lost the first set 1-11.
Richard Moss and Sessions team-mate Mick Wilcockson won the Men's Doubles for the second year running, defeating the Coneysthorpe pairing of Martin Lowe and Ian Stansfield in straight sets.
Martin Lowe won the Veterans' Singles, beating Jon Wooldridge in the final after losing the first set. The Holgate WMC pairing of John Farmery and Graham Hatfield defeated Jo Suchecki (Bootham) and Mick Wilcockson to take the Veterans' Doubles title.
Lewis McCarthy (York RI) defeated his younger brother and team-mate Jake in the Cadets' singles final.
There was a new event this year; the Juniors Doubles. Luke Blackburn and Ethan Lowe defeated Jamie Cameron and Jake McCarthy in the final to win the new trophy called "The Betty Norman Trophy sponsored by Sainsburys". Sainsburys are supporting table tennis for the 2012 Olympics and they donated the trophy. They also provided refreshments over the two days. The main sponsors of the tournament were GMB.
