Winter League
Bootham CC 'A' (Graham Cook, Paul Eastwood, Joe Suchecki, Jon Wooldridge) won division 1 by 30 points from Holgate WMC 'A' (John Eastwood, John Farmery, Graham Hatfield). Martin Lowe topped the averages, with Richard Moss and Paul Eastwood also finishing in the 90s. Mick Wilcockson, John Farmery, Jon Wooldridge and Graham Cook finished in the 80s.
Division 2 was won by Holgate WMC 'B' (John Flintoft, Vic Reed, Ed Wardman, Bob Young), 9 points ahead of Nestle Rowntree A (David Lamb, Bob Lee, Dave,Simpson, Keith Webster). David Lamb topped the averages, with Richard Ingleby also in the 90s, followed by Bob Young, Ed Wardman, Rod Lowery and Trevor Wright in the 80s.
Bootham CC 'C' (Gareth Bryning, Steve Milner, Ray Mitchell, Bob Plant) won division 3, 8 points clear of Coneysthorpe 'B' (Daniel Foxton, John Foxton, Malcolm Haswell). Simon Prins finished top of the averages, with Malcolm Haswell, Gareth Bryning, John Temple, Ray Mitchell and Steve Milner also finishing in the 80s.
Division 4 was won by Groves WMC 'D' (Mick Belton, Keith Hood, John Orchard, Steve Potter), 10 points ahead of Poppleton F (Alan Jones, Jon Soanes, Tom Wright). Jon Soanes topped the averages, with Tom Wright, Keith Hood and Howard Lewis also in the 80s.
York Closed Championships 2005
Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) won the Men’s Singles, beating Richard Moss (the champion of the last 3 years) in the best final for many years. In the semi-finals Martin beat John Farmery (Holgate WMC) and Richard beat Mick Wilcockson (Sessions),
Jill Rounce retained the Ladies’ Singles, beating Helen Standish (Shepherds) in the final.
In the doubles, Richard Moss teamed up with Mick Wilcockson to win the Men’s event, Jill won the Ladies’ event with Holly Lewis (York RI), and Jill won the Mixed Doubles with Mick Wilcockson.
In the Junior Singles final, Stephen Robinson (York RI) beat James Parker (Sessions). James won the Cadets event.
Keith Webster (Nestle Rowntree) won the Clifford Trophy for the best performance. Keith won the Over 55s Singles, beating Division One players in this event and in the Men’s Singles.
Handicap Competitions
Shepherd and Machell Trophies 2004-2005
The Bagshaw Trophy (individual handical competition) was held during the week before the start of the Winter League. Richard Church (Norwich Union) beat Richard Crowther (York RI) in the final. The other finalists were Rob Farmery (Sessions), Steve Potter (Groves WMC), Brian Walton (York RI) and Mick Wilcockson (Sessions). Tim Smith, who organised the competition, presented the trophies.
The finals of the team handicap knock-out competitions were played at the Railway Institute on Friday 6th May 2005. Both matches were very close and were decided in the last games. Poppleton 'F' (John Rodwell, Jon Soanes, Tom Wright) beat Shepherds 'C' (Nigel Baker, Rick Gledhill, Shahzad Umar) 5-4 in the Shepherd Trophy, Jon Soanes beating Shahzad Umar in the deciding game. In the Machell Trophy, Sessions 'C' (Rob Farmery, John Stokes, Len Watson) and Groves WMC 'A' (Martin Hood, Alfie Potter, Steve Potter) finished on 4.5 points each, Sessions 'C' winning on countback, after John Stokes and Martin Hood drew the deciding match. Steve Tindall, of sponsors NEDL, presented the trophies.
The Summer League (2004) was won by Bootham CC ‘C’ (Rich Harrison, Richard Ingleby, Lee Poulter). They beat Groves WMC ‘A’ (Keith Hood, Alfie Potter, Steve Potter) 6-4 in the final.
Yorkshire League
York Juniors (Richard Church, Nathan Horsley, Laurence Houlison, James Parker) won the Yorkshire League.
York Veterans 1st team gained promotion into the Yorkshire League 1st division.
The veterans’ second team finished 4th in division 2.
John Eastwood played his 150th veterans match for York.
Other highlights
Richard Moss competed in the English Closed Championships.
James Parker reached the finals of the National Cadets’ (under-15s) Championships.
