The York Closed Table Tennis Championships were held on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th January 2011 at the Railway Institute Gymnasium.
In the Men's Singles final Richard Moss (York RI) and Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) met for the seventh successive year. Lowe had a flying star, taking the first four points, but Moss fought back to win the first set 11-9. He went on to win the second set 11-8 before Lowe won a close third set 12-10. Moss dominated the fourth set from the start and won it 11-5 to take the title. This was another match of the highest quality and it was Moss’s third win in a row and sixth title altogether.
Moss had beaten Joel Wright (Coneysthorpe) in straight-sets in his semi-final, while Lowe dropped the first set against Coneysthorpe team-mate Ashley Hodgson in his semi-final. Earlier Hodgson had defeated Lowe in a very exciting Veterans’ Singles final, taking the deciding game by 15-13 after being two sets down.
Jane Cohen (York RI) regained the Ladies' singles title, defeating newcomer Dirui Hu (University). Cohen was too strong for her opponent in an entertaining, attacking game and won in straight sets, 11-7, 11-9, 11-4.
Jane retained the other two titles she had won for the last two years. She teamed up with club-mate Anne Barnard to take the Ladies’ Doubles in straight sets against Marian Broadbent (BT) and Chris Bartle (York RI), and with Nathan Horsley (York RI) to win the Mixed Doubles final against Broadbent and Jon Wooldridge (Bootham CC) by three sets to one.
Horsley and Moss won a very close Men’s Doubles final against last year’s winners, Hodgson and Lowe, winning the deciding game by 13-11. Hodgson and Lowe won the Veterans' Doubles events, defeating Richard Crowther and Mick Wilcockson (both York RI) in straight sets in the final.
James Atkins (Shepherds) retained the Juniors' Singles title, defeating Jake McCarthy (York RI) by three sets to nil in the final, although Jake won his third Cadets' Singles title in a row, defeating Ethan Lowe (Coneysthorpe) in the final. James teamed up with and Nathan Taylor (York RI) to win the Junior Doubles final against Jake and Jamie Cameron (York RI).
The Clifford Trophy, awarded for the outstanding performance over the two days, went Filip Wojtkowiak (York RI) for winning the Division Two Singles, the Restricted Singles, and defeating Division One players in the Men’s Singles.
