Report by Tim Smith
The Bagshaw Trophy, York's annual winter league curtain-raiser, has been won this year by RI's 11 year old Jake McCarthy. Competitors played in round-robin groups with four players going forward to the finals evening.Other group winners were Shepherds' Keith Webster and RI's Richard Crowther and Geoff Leafe. On finals evening McCarthy played exceptionally well to win all his games, including a big win over the awkward Leafe, and was joined in the grand final by Crowther, who narrowly beat Webster in a rat-a-tat final group game. The grand final was a more one-sided affair with McCarthy hitting too well for Crowther to keep him below his handicap target score. Bagshaw organiser and League Chair, Tim Smith said "It's good to see a junior player succeeding at such a young age. I predict that Jake and his older brother Lewis will make quite an impact in division 4 this year. We are also seeing lots more young people coming to coaching at Millthorpe and moving on to join clubs, which has to be good for the future of the League.
