The new format of six divisions of eight teams was introduced, along with play-offs for promotion and relegation.
Bootham CC 'A' (Paul Eastwood, Joe Suchecki, Jon Wooldridge) retained the Division 1 title, beating York RI ‘A’ (Doug Bartle, Richard Crowther, Paul Noutch, Stephen Robinson) into second place. Martin Lowe topped the averages for the second season running, with Paul Eastwood finishing second.
Division 2 was won by Poppleton ‘A’ (Steve Ayres, Mike Cooper, Mark Hughes, Dave Rawlings). Nestle Rowntree ‘A’ (Dave Lamb, Dave Simpson, Stu Stevens, Keith Webster) finished second but missed out on promotion, losing a play-off against Groves WMC ’A’ from Division 1. Simon Jackson finished top of the averages, with Dave Lamb in second place.
Coneysthorpe ‘B’ (Daniel Foxton, John Foxton, Malcolm Haswell) topped Division 3. Bootham CC ‘B’ (Gareth Bryning, Steve Milner, Ray Mitchell, Bob Plant) finished second and missed out on promotion, losing a play-off to York RI ‘C’ from Division 2. Daniel Foxton topped the averages, narrowly ahead of Mal Haswell in second place.
Division 4 champions were Shepherds ‘A’ (Gary Neads, Mick Surtees, Shazhard Umar). Second placed Holgate WMC ‘C’ (Vic Reed, Peter Taylor, John Temple) were also promoted as they beat Poppleton ‘B’ from Division 3 in a play-off. Mike Surtees topped the averages, narrowly ahead of Tom Wright.
Groves WMC ‘D’ (Mike Belton, Keith Hood, Steve Potter) won Division 5. Second placed Holgate WMC ‘D’ (Colin Dickson,Ray Holroyd,Steve Wands) missed out on promotion, losing to Norwich Union ‘A’ from Division 4. Mike Belton topped the averages, followed closely by Colin Dickson, Luke Blackburn and Ray Holroyd.
York RI ‘I’ (Kenny Brown, Andy Grayson, Mike Shepherdson, John Smith) won Division 6 by 31 points. York RI ‘K’ (Chris Bartle, Jeff Brown, Jean Carter, Andrea Potter) finished second but missed out on promotion, losing to York RI ‘G’ from division 5 in a play-off. Andy Grayson topped the averages.
York Closed Championships 2006
Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) retained the Men’s Singles title, again beating Richard Moss (Sessions) in the final.
Jill Rounce (York RI) retained the Ladies’ Singles, beating Jean Carter (York RI) in the final.
In the doubles, Richard Moss and Mick Wilcockson (Sessions) retained the Men’s event, Jill won the Ladies’ event with Marian Broadbent (BT), and Jill won the Mixed Doubles with Mick Wilcockson.
In the Junior Singles, Stephen Robinson (York RI) beat James Parker (Sessions) in a repeat of last year’s final. James Atkins (North Yorkshire Coaching) won the Cadets event, beating Luke Blackburn (York RI) in the final.
Richard Church (York RI) won the Clifford Trophy for the best performance. Richard reached the final of the Restricted Singles.
Handicap Competitions
Shepherd and Machell Trophies 2005-2006
The Bagshaw Trophy (individual handicap competition) was held during the week before the start of the Winter League. Nathan Horsley (Sessions) beat John Farmery (Holgate WMC) in the final. The other finalists were Richard Church (York RI), Steve Potter (Groves WMC), Adrian Church (Norwich Union) and Tom Weedon (York RI).
The finals of the team handicap knock-out competitions were played at the Railway Institute on Friday 5th May 2006. Both matches were close. In the Shepherd Trophy, Sessions A (Nathan Horsley, John Stokes, Nigel Thorn) beat Holgate WMC C (Vic Reed, Pete Taylor, John Temple) 5-3. In the Machell Trophy, British Telecom A (Terry Botting, Howard Broadbent, Dave Norville) beat British Telecom B (Bill Carter, Brian Milner, Jim Stevenson) 5-4. Steve Tindall, of sponsors NEDL, presented the trophies.
The Summer League (2005) was won by York RI ‘A’ (Jeff Brown, Mike Dinsdale, Trevor Wright) beating Poppleton (Richard Collier, John Lloyd, Horst Meyer) 6-3 in the final.
Yorkshire League
The juniors’ team were runner-up in their championship. Some of the weekends clashed with the British League.
The veterans’ first team avoided relegation from division 1.
The veterans’ second team remain in division 2.
