Winter League
Topspin York A (Nathan Taylor, Jon Wooldridge, Joe Wright) retained the Division 1 championship, ahead of York RI A (Nathan Horsley, Paul Robertson, Filip Wojtkowiak). Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe A) topped the averages, with Calum Goodwin (University A) second.
Division 2 was won by York RI C (Andy Kirk, Aidy McClaren, Tim Smith). Bootham A (Gareth Bryning, Ian Hilton, Steve Milner, Jo Suchecki) were runners-up but missed out on promotion after losing the play-off against Shiyi Ling B. Graham Hatfield (Clarence C) came top of the averages, losing just one match, with Mark Blackburn (York RI D) second.
Wigginton B (Chris Bauer, Sam Crutchley, Mark Hodgson) topped Division 3. Second-placed Strensall B (Dave Hough, Simon Prins, Peter Taylor, John Temple) were also promoted. Mark Hodgson topped the averages, with Sam Crutchley a close second.
Division 4 champions were Wigginton C (Richard Bayliss, Nathan Fairburn, Ian Oxborough, Malcolm Sandlan). Wigginton D (Russ Broadbent, Steve Cameron, Andrew Male, Clive Pottage) were runners-up but missed out on promotion after losing the play-off against BT A. Ian Oxborough and Malcolm Sandlan topped the averages.
York Closed Championships
Tsz Chung Tang (University) won the Men’s Singles title, beating Yoni Caspi (Topspin York) in the final. The Ladies champion is Moke Warburton (Coneysthorpe) who beat Ruth Purseglove (Ryedale) in the final. Moke teamed up with Cathy Garnsworthy (York RI) to win the Ladies’ Doubles and with Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) to win the Mixed Doubles. The Topspin York pairing of James Atkins and Will Whattam won the Men’s Doubles. Sammy Kelly (Topspin York) won the Junior Singles, Sam Lowe (Coneysthorpe) retained the Cadets’ (under-15) title and Mia Longman (Coneysthorpe) won the Under 11s competition.
Handicap Competitions
The finals of the team handicap knock-out competitions were played at the Railway Institute on Wednesday 8th May 2019. The Shepherds Trophy was won by Shiyi Ling B (Arthur Sorley, Tom Thorp, Razvan Ababei), who beat Wigginton E (John Hunt, Vic Demciuch, Les Kozak) 5-3 in the final. In the Machell Trophy final Shiyi Ling C (Mikey Arnold, Lewis Harrison, John Hughes) beat York RI E ((Mark Antrobus, Marcin Ziolek, Alex Kirk) 5-1.
The Summer League (2018) was won by Shiyi Ling A (Mikey Arnold, Paul Greenwood, Tom Thorp). They beat Shiyi Ling C (James Atkins, Ryan Hood, Arthur Sorley) 5.5-4.5 in the final.
Yorkshire Veterans' League
York 1 (Jon Wooldridge (13/27), Richard Crowther (4/27), Martin Hood (1/18), Mick Wilcockson (0/6)) were relegated from Division 1.
In Division 2 York 2 (Graham Hatfield (9/15), John Farmery (7/12), Alfie Potter (6/12), Gareth Bryning (1/3), Martin Hood (0/3)) finished second and are promoted, whilst York 3 (Andy Kirk (3/3), Jeff Cohen (3/6), Mick Kenyon (3/9), Martin Hood (2/3), Aidy McClaren (2/3), Richard McCarthy (2/6), Tim Smith (2/15),Adam Exley (1/6), Chris Sharples (0/3)) were relegated.
In Division 3 York 4 (Andy Kirk (12/18), Dave Quinlan (7/15), Jo Suchecki (7/15), Aidy McClaren (1/3), Tim Smith (1/3)) finished third so just missed out on promotion, and York 5 (Gareth Bryning (15/18), Mark Antrobus (4/9), Russ Barton (3/6), Chris Maude (3/11), Paul Halmshaw (2/3), Paul Seekings (0/6)) were sixth out of seven teams. Gareth Bryning won the merit award (most wins) in this division.
Deaths
Graham Carlton died in October 2018. Graham played in the York League for Groves WMC in the mid-2000s but played most of his table tennis in the Selby League.
Doug Bartle died on the evening of Wednesday 9th January 2019 whilst playing in a table tennis match in the Bradford League. At the York Closed Championships Doug won the Men’s Singles in 1988, as well as Veterans’ Singles (twice), Over-55’s Singles (4 times), Division 1 Singles (once), Men’s Doubles (twice), Mixed Doubles (6 times), Veterans’ Doubles (6 times) and Hard-bat Doubles (once). During his career in York he played primarily for York RI, with whom he won a number of Division 1 titles. Doug represented York in the Yorkshire Men’s and Veterans’ Leagues on many occasions.
Arthur Barnard died on Saturday 2nd February 2019 after a long illness. Arthur played for York RI from the early sixties until 1978 and won the Junior Singles at the York Closed in 1966.
