Individual handicap competition.
The finals of the 2014 Bagshaw Trophy were held at the RI on Friday 19th September. 8 players had progressed from the group stages to finals night, playing in 2 round-robin groups of four. It goes to show how seriously some players are taking our handicap competitions as four of the players who made finals night were the team who had won the Summer League title just a few days before! The 2 groups on finals night featured some good matches with one group’s outcome moving this way and that throughout the evening ending in a 3 way tie. Following play-offs, RI’s Dave Smith came through to play club-mate Ben Lockyer in the final. Ben’s steady play in the first end of the final left Dave too much to do in the second, with Ben running out the clear winner – a thrilling end (for now…) to Ben’s table tennis career in York as he has now gone off to University in Coventry.
Full list of finalists: Mikey Arnold (RI), Lewis Harrison (RI), Ben Lockyer (RI), Ben Robinson (RI), Peter Smalley (RI), Dave Smith (RI), John Stokes (RI), Nathan Taylor (Bootham).
Organiser and League Chair Tim Smith commented: “I am pleased to see another good entry for this year’s Bagshaw Trophy and would encourage players from all divisions and clubs to enter; it’s a great competition and a good way to get back into the swing of the game the week before the Winter League starts.
