The Northern Powergrid York and District Table Tennis League is nearing its conclusion but there are still some notable issues to be resolved.
Coneysthorpe A are Champions of Division One but the relegation and play-off situation is undecided. University A, who have three matches to play, and Crescent B are fighting to avoid the drop. The team that finishes the higher of the pair, who clash shortly, will have to play-off with York RI E for a Division One place. Jim Mills and John Wooldridge were unbeaten as Bootham A beat Crescent B 8-2, though the losers were unfortunate to see four points dropped in sets which went to a final game. RI E secured the necessary points for a play-off spot, with a 6-4 win over Tramways, for whom Mike Robinson turned in a fine performance to win his singles.
York RI C are Division Two Champions, while York RI F and Bootham D are relegated to Division Three.
The Division Three title rests between Shepherds D and Holgate C, who play in the final fixture of the season. Holgate D look almost certain to have retained their status after thumping University B 8-2, Pete Taylor in control. York RI H are relegated with Aviva A in danger of the same fate.

Ed Wardman helped consign Bootham D to relegation to Division Three in the Northern Powergrid York and District Table Tennis League as he guided Shepherds C to a 7-3 win, though they went down by the same score to a Rich McCarthy inspired RI C. Jonathan Chabry and John Temple, playing his last game for the club, saw RI D to an 8-2 success over RI F. RI E remain favourites for second place, though they could muster only two players for a draw with Bootham B, Mark Blackburn playing well. Bootham D had earlier beaten Tramways 6-4, Nigel Reeson the top player. Dave Rawlings was in tenacious form as he led Bootham C to a 7-3 win over Shepherds A, who recovered to beat RI F 8-2, Ian Williams and Andy Kirk unbeaten.
In Division One, Champions Coneysthorpe A thumped Crescent B 9-1, Martin Lowe and Chris Londesbrough unbeaten, but they picked up three crucial points as they lost to RI A, whose Mick Wilcockson and Paul Robertson were on form. Top youngster James Rule played extremely well to win his three singles for Coneysthorpe B in their narrow win over Holgate A, including the scalp of the third ranked player in the league, Aidan Ranftler, winning 11-9 in the deciding game. Lowe and Joel Wright proved too good for RI B in a 7-3 win.
Aviva A’s hopes of escaping the drop to the basement received a blow as they crashed 8-2 at BT A, Howard Broadbent not dropping a game. Holgate C lost valuable points in their quest for the Division Three Championship as they beat Bootham E 6-4, Bob Young working hard for his wins. RI H look set for relegation after crashing 9-1 at BT B, who had Bill Carter and Jim Stevenson to thank.
Thornton-le-Clay are the Division Four Champions after overcoming a depleted Trustmarque 7-3. The losers forced a draw with Hartrigg Oaks, whose Roy Barker won three very close sets, and he helped his side to a narrow win over Bootham G, though Barker was unable to prevent his side being whitewashed by Shepherds E, for whom Alan Johnston, Nigel Baker and Steve Webster were unbeaten and they enjoyed another win, 8-2, over a two man RI J. A depleted Bootham G still overcame RI K 7-3, while Holgate E beat RI I 7-3.

RI F may be doomed to relegation to Division Three of the York and District Table Tennis League, but their Lewis McCarthy claimed the scalp of Dave Simpson as Shepherds B won 8-2. Bootham D look set to join them in the third tier after a 9-1 thrashing at the hands of Bootham B, though they lost three of the sets by the minimum margin. Ady McClaren was in fine form and Gareth Bryning was also unbeaten, and they went on to beat Shepherds A 6-4. Andy Kirk helped the losers bounce back as they forced a draw with RI E, beating Mark Blackburn 11-4, 11-9, 11-5. Bootham C edged out Shepherds C, though the losers’ John Flintoft was the top player.
In Division Three, Aviva A helped their survival chances with a 7-3 win at RI G, Mich Slezak undefeated, though the losers responded with a narrow win at Bootham F, youngster Matty Roberts overcoming veteran Ray Mitchell 11-9 in the final game to complete his singles wins. It needed a doubles success for a Michael Holmes inspired University B to beat BT A by the narrowest of margins.
Thornton-le Clay are the Champions elect in Division Four and they needed only two players, Trevor Percival and Neil Lynch, to dispose of Holgate E 7-3, and aided by Rod Lowery they then dismissed RI J 10-0. RI I whitewashed RI K and then overcame Aviva B 6-4, though Terry Ruane did well for the losers. Nigel Baker was in determined mood for Shepherds E in their 6-4 win over Holgate E, overcoming Peter Waring 15-13 in the final game in a marathon contest, and helping in a doubles win to complete the match unbeaten.

Coneysthorpe A are the Champions of the Northern Powergrid York and District Table Tennis League for the fourth successive year. Ashley Hodgson and Joel Wright saw them to a 9-1 win over Bootham A and though Paul Robertson led nearest rivals RIA to a narrow victory over Coneysthorpe B, and a 7-3 success at home to Bootham A, it wasn’t enough to prevent the Ryedale outfit securing their crown.
Bootham A bounced back with a 7-3 win over Coneysthorpe B, Jon Wooldridge and Jimmy Mills impressing, but they crashed 8-2 to Holgate A, Aidan Ranftler and Graham Hatfield too good, with Hatfield again in top form to win his three singles at RI B, and assisting in a doubles success which earned a fine win. However, Anders Hammarback proved more than a match for Holgate A, though his University A side went down to a 6-4 defeat. However, those points gained were valuable, after Crescent B were whitewashed by RI B, they stand just one point ahead of University A at the foot of the table.
RI C are the Champions of Division Two after a hard earned win over a two man Tramways, whose Mike Robinson claimed the scalp of Rich McCarthy in four games. 14-year-old Matt Roberts, playing up from Division Three for RI C, underlined his progress with a win over Terry Nicholson.
The title fight in Division Three looks like going down to the wire after both the top two sides registered 8-2 successes. Reigning Champions Shepherds D overcame a two man Bootham E, though there was a good win for Matt Ayres over Mick Surtees, while Holgate C’s Bob Young replaced Surtees at the top of the averages, after a terrific display in their in house fixture with Holgate D, not dropping a game. Graham Hood and Rob Farmery joined Young in a 10-0 romp over RI H, which makes it look likely that the losers will be tasting basement table tennis next year. The top two sides clash in the final game of the season which looks certain to be a deciding contest.
Holgate D piled the pressure on RI H after a creditable draw with BT B, though Jim Stevenson proved too strong, though he met his match in Steve Long as BT B went down 8-2 to Bootham F.

York Singles Champion Martin Lowe went down to his first defeat of the season in Division One of the Northern Powergrid York and District Table Tennis League when he crashed 11-7 in the fourth game to Paul Robertson of RI A. It wasn’t enough however, to prevent the champions elect Coneysthorpe A registering a narrow 6-4 win.
Division Two leaders RI C were grateful to Rich McCarthy as they had a great match with Bootham B, needing a doubles win for a narrow 6-4 success. They have a huge lead and look certain to be in Division One next year. Sadly, RI F will be going down to Division Three, their relegation confirmed as they crashed 9-1 to RI E, Ivan Guilliatt picking up the point for the losers, claiming the scalp of Dave Jackson in a shock win. Shepherds A’s enigmatic veteran Keith Webster led his side to an 8-2 victory over relegation threatened Bootham D. The clash with opposing captain Dave Quinlan was fought out all the way, an epic 5 game contest edged by Webster, who has been in determined form recently, also guiding his side to a shock 8-2 win over a weakened RI C.
Tramways gave their hopes of surviving the drop to Division Three a boost by picking up valuable points, forcing a draw with an illness hit Shepherds C, John Flintoft the top player.
Bootham C have had a difficult time, dumped 7-3 by a below strength Shepherds B, for whom Andy Fletcher and the resurgent Nathan Taylor excelled, and they were then held to a draw by RI D. Jonathan Chabry was in fine form for the railwaymen, and Simon Prins picked up a fine win over Mike Cooper, before Bootham C mopped up a 9-1 win over RI F, though Guilliatt again turned in a good performance, this time overcoming Richard Ingleby in a very close 5 game affair.
A weakened RI D gained another draw, this time holding second placed RI E, who nonetheless still looked booked for a play-off to get into Division One, but they were no match for the talented Frenchman, Chabry. Shepherds B maintained their march up the table with a decisive 7-3 win over Shepherds C, Fletcher and Taylor again impressing.

They followed up with a whitewash of bottom side RI K who also crashed to RI J. John Stokes and Paul Greenwood guided RI I to a 7-3 win over Bootham G, who bounced back with a narrow win over RI J thanks to Jason Chinnian. Ruane was again in form and ensured a narrow win for Aviva B over Hartrigg Oaks, who were also blown away 8-2 by Holgate E, Pete Waring and Dan Hickey too good. Sara Hough surprised Steve Webster in one game, but it wasn’t enough to prevent another thrashing for RI K at the hands of Shepherds E, who then met their match in the form of the remorseless Ruane, who produced a remarkable success over Nigel Baker, losing the first two games before winning the next three to help his side to a draw.
In Division Three, leaders Shepherds C dropped what could be a couple of vital points as they overcame a two man Bootham F, but recovered to whitewash a weakened RI H, then dropping two games to relegation threatened Holgate D, though Chris Hutchinson and Paul Kozyra were unbeaten.
