Winter League
Coneysthorpe ‘A’ (Ashley Hodgson, Martin Lowe, Joel Wright) retained the Division 1 championship, again beating YRI 'A', (Nathan Horsley, Richard Moss, Mick Wilcockson) into second place. Martin Lowe topped the averages, winning all of his games.
Division 2 was won by University A (Andy Bevan, Anders Hammarback, Mike Holmes, Rudy Huang, Senri Ohara). Senri Ohara topped the averages, winning all of his games. University A defeated Shepherds A in a play-off to clinch a place in division 1 next season.
Shepherds C (Chris Hutchinson, Paul Kozyra, Gary Neads, Mike Surtees) topped Division 3 but lost out on promotion, losing a play-off against Tramways. Yuk Yin Wong (University) and Mike Surtees (Shepherds) topped the averages.
Division 4 champions were York RI J (David Dunn, Richard Morris, Mike Shepherdson, Andy Whitehead) and are promoted after a play-off win against Aviva A. Trevor Percival (Thornton-le-Clay) topped the averages, winning all of his games.
York Closed Championships
Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) won the Men’s Singles title for the fifth time He beat Senri Ohara (University) in the final.
In the doubles, Martin Lowe and Ashley Hodgson (Coneysthorpe) won the Men’s event, and the Mixed was won by Marian Broadbent (BT) and Jon Wooldridge (Bootham).
Jake McCarthy (Shepherds) won the Junior Singles title and Ethan Lowe (Coneysthorpe) won the Cadets’ event.
Handicap Competitions
The Bagshaw Trophy (individual handicap competition) was held during the week before the start of the Winter League. Filip Wojtkowiak (York RI) beat Jake McCarthy (Shepherds) in the final. The other finalists were Lewis McCarthy (York RI), Nathan Taylor (Shepherds) and Alfie Potter (CrescentWMC).
The finals of the team handicap knock-out competitions were played at the Railway Institute on Thursday 3rd May 2012. The Shepherds Trophy was won by Coneysthorpe 'A' (Mike Fenby, Ethan Lowe, Martin Lowe). They beat Crescent WMC B (Martin Hood, Mick Kenyon, Alfie Potter) 5 - 2 in the final. York RI I (Mike Dinsdale, Geoff Leafe, Chris Megone) beat Holgate WMC E (Colin Dickson, Pete Taylor, Steve Wands) 5 - 2 in the Machell Trophy.
The Summer League (2011) was won by York RI D (Mike Dinsdale, Ivan Guillatt, Sammy Wosciechowski). They beat York RI B (David Dunn, Lewis McCarthy, Andy Whitehead) 6-4 in a close final.
Yorkshire Veterans' League
In division 1 York I (Jon Wooldridge (8/15), Mick Wilcockson (7/9), John Farmery (4/21), Richard Crowther (3/12), Jo Suchecki (2/9), Tim Smith (0/6)) finished mid-table with 3 wins from eight matches.
In division 2 York II (Martin Hood, Mick Kenyon, Alfie Potter) finished second so are promoted to division 1, while York III (Jeff Cohen, Rich McCarthy, Tim Smith, Keith Webster) have been relegated to division 3.
Deaths
Betty Norman, after a long illness. Betty served table tennis in York for many years, as a player (winning Ladies' Singles and Doubles titles at the York Closed) and as a coach. She held the posts of Coaching Secretary and Development Officer at various times and she was President of The Association from 1996 until her death.
John Parrish, aged 76. John joined Terrys and helped them to win the division 3 championship in 1967-68, and the division 1 title in 1969-70. At the York Closed he won the Men's Singles in 1970 and the Mixed Doubles, with Helen Standish, on four consecutive occasions, from 1968 to 1971. John represented York in the Yorkshire League more than fifty times.
Eddy Barker, former York League player, aged 74. Eddy played for York RI.
Joe Ellis, former York League player.
Ivor Wiley, former York League player.
Sue Shackleton, former York player, and twice winner of the Ladies' Doubles at the York Closed in the 1960s.
