Shepherd/Machell Trophies 2014-2015
Winter League
Coneysthorpe ‘A’ (Ashley Hodgson, Martin Lowe, James Rule) retained the Division 1 championship, ahead of YRI 'A', (Jonathan Chabry, Paul Robertson, Mick Wilcockson, Filip Wojtkowiak). Martin Lowe topped the averages without losing a match.
Division 2 was won by York RI C (Jeff Cohen, Andy Fletcher, Andy Kirk, Philippe Leopold). Andy Fletcher topped the averages, losing only two matches. York RI D (second in division 2) defeated University A (second from bottom in division 1) in the play-off to decide who plays in division 1 next season.
York RI F (Dom Ainger, Lewis McCarthy, Adam Ridley) topped Division 3. Second-placed Bootham F (Matt Ayres, Rich Collyer, Horst Meyer, Lee Poulter) were also promoted. Adam Ridley topped the averages.
Division 4 champions were York RI H (Paul Greenwood, Peter Griffiths, John Mothersill, John Stokes). In second place and also promoted were Bootham G (Russ Barton, Jason Chinnian, Alastair Domville, Paul Seekings) after they defeated Crescent E (second from bottom in division 3) in the play-off to decide who plays in division 3 next season. Paul Greenwood topped the averages, just ahead of Russ Barton.
York Closed Championships
Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) won the Men’s Singles title for the eighth time. He beat Aidan Ranftler (Clarence Club) in the final. The Ladies champion is Simona Stanynaite (Carence Club), who beat Anne Barnard (York RI) in the final.
In the doubles Martin Lowe and James Rule (both Coneysthorpe) won the Men’s event, Marian Broadbent (BT) and Rachel Greener retained the Ladies’ title , and the Mixed was won by Jane Cohen (York RI) and Martin Lowe.
James Rule won won the Junior Singles, while Matthew Lowe (Coneysthorpe) won the Cadets’ (under-15) title.
Handicap Competitions
The Bagshaw Trophy (individual handicap competition) was held during the week before the start of the Winter League. Ben Lockyer beat Dave Smith in the final. The other finalists were Mikey Arnold, Lewis Harrison, Ben Robinson, Peter Smalley, John Stokes, and Nathan Taylor.
The finals of the team handicap knock-out competitions were played at the Railway Institute on Thursday 7th May 2015. The Shepherds Trophy was and all-Coneysthorpe affair with the B team ((Martin Lowe, Matthew Lowe, Tom Needham) beating the A team (Neil Raine, James Rule, Joel Wright) 5-4 in the final. In the Machell Trophy final York RI I (Mike Dinsdale, Alex Robinson, Ben Robinson) beat Bootham E ((Peter Corner, Ray Mitchell, Jan Suchecki) 5-3.
The Summer League (2014) was won by York RI B (Mikey Arnold, Ben Lockyer, Peter Smalley, and non-playing captain Dave Smith). They beat Bootham A (Jimmy Mills, Rich Harrison, Lee Poulter) in the final by 5.5 - 1.5.
Yorkshire Veterans' League
York 1 (Jon Wooldridge (11/24), Mick Wilcockson (10/15), Richard Crowther (7/18), Chris Londesborough (6/15)) retained their place in Division 1, having finished 6th out of nine teams.
In Division 2 York 3 (Andy Fletcher (10/21), Jeff Cohen (5/12), Tim Smith (1/18), Andy Kirk (0/12)) finished 7th and York 2 (Mick Kenyon (5/12), Martin Hood (5/15), Alfie Potter (5/15), Jo Suchecki (2/9), John Farmery (1/6), Mark Blackburn (0/3), Aidy McClaren (0/3)) finished eighth out of eight so both were relegated.
Deaths
Brian Walton died on Sunday 15 March 2015. Brian played for many years at RI and many members will also remember him as a hardworking Gym Attendant at the RI Queen St Gymnasium. For years Brian took charge of putting up and taking down the lights for the York Closed, and will be missed by all as a true sporting gentleman.
