Winter League
Topspin York (James Atkins, Nathan Taylor, Jon Wooldridge, Joe Wright) won the Division 1 championship, ahead of YRI 'A' (Nathan Horsley, Paul Robertson, Filip Wojtkowiak). Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe A) topped the averages, losing only 3 matches out of 61, with Joe Wright second.
Division 2 was won comfortably by Clarence B (Steve Ayres, Martin Hood, Mick Kenyon, Alfie Potter), returning to Division 1 after being relegated last season. York RI D (Mark Blackburn, John Hughes, Ben Lockyer, Peter Smalley) were runners-up but missed out on promotion after losing the play-off against Clarence A. Graham Hatfield and Alex Nagle came top of the averages.
Wigginton & Haxby A (Paul Halmshaw, Naz Hossienian, John McLaughlin, Malcolm Sandlan) topped Division 3. Second-placed Clarence CIU A (Gary Bunce, Peter Corner, Jan Suchecki) were also promoted. Arthur Sorley topped the averages, with Gary Bunce a close second.
Division 4 champions were University C (Rob Cowling, Thomas Cuthbert, Ollie Kossoff, Doug Muirhead). Second-placed South Bank B (Adrian Church, Dom McHugh, Andrew Slezak) were also promoted. Chris Bauer topped the averages.
York Closed Championships
Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) regained the Men’s Singles title, beating Joe Wright (Topspin York) in the final. The Ladies champion is Cancan Zhang (University) who beat Rachel Langhorn (Millthorpe) in the final. Cancan teamed up with Marian Broadbent (BT) to win the Ladies’ Doubles. The Topspin York pairing of Joni Caspi and Joe Wright won the Men’s Doubles, and the Mixed Doubles was won by Marian Broadbent and Aidan Ranftler (Clarence TTC). Mikey Arnold (York RI) won the Junior Singles, while Sam Lowe (Coneysthorpe) won the Cadets’ (under-15) title.
Handicap Competitions
The finals of the team handicap knock-out competitions were played at the Railway Institute on Wednesday 9th May 2018. The Shepherds Trophy was won by York RI A (Nathan Horsley, Paul Robertson, Filip Wojtkowiak), who beat Clarence A (Milo Cupik, John Farmery, Aidan Ranftler) 5.5-2.5 in the final. In the Machell Trophy final Coneysthorpe A (Mike Fenby, Tom Needham, Keith Wilkinson) beat York RI F (Lewis McCarthy, Peter Smalley, Tom Thorp) 5-2.
The Summer League (2017) was won by York RI A (Mikey Arnold, Peter Smalley, Arthur Sorley). They beat York RI B (Lewis Harrison, Tom Thorp, Ben Lockyer) in the final.
Yorkshire Veterans' League
York 1 (Mick Wilcockson (9/15), Jon Wooldridge (8/15), Martin Hood (4/24), Richard Crowther (3/9), Andy Fletcher (1/6)) retained their place in Division 1, having finished 7th out of nine teams.
In Division 2 York 2 (John Farmery (13/17), Graham Hatfield (11/20), Alfie Potter (9/17), Mick Wilcockson (1/3), Richard Crowther (0/3)) finished third out of eight so missed out on promotion by one place. York 3 (Richard McCarthy (6/21), Mick Kenyon (4/15), Tim Smith (4/21), Dave Quinlan (3/6)) were seventh and were relegated.
York 4 (Andy Kirk (11/18), Jo Suchecki (7/15), Dave Quinlan (5/12), Jeff Cohen (3/3), Alfie Potter (3/3), Russ Barton (0/3)) finished fourth, while York 5 (Gareth Bryning (7/15), Russ Barton (4/15), Mark Antrobus (2/15),Chris Maude (1/6), John Eastwood (0/3), David Smith (0/3)) were sixth out of eight teams in Division 3.
Deaths
Steve Wands died on Sunday 3rd December 2017 aged 64, after suffering a heart attack during a table tennis match at Clarence Club the previous Monday. Steve played for Holgate WMC and Clarence TTC from 2004-05, and was Secretary of Clarence TTC from 2015.
Mick Burnett died on Friday 29th December 2017, aged 65, after a long illness that meant he was unable to play table tennis for the last fifteen years. Many will remember Mick as an enthusiastic player who enjoyed success for Coneysthorpe in the York & District League Division 2, and was competitive in Division 1. Mick also represented Swinton in the Ryedale League for over thirty years, and won many awards. He also played for Swinton in the Scarborough & District League for a number of seasons. He earned great respect for his sportsmanship and dedication to the game.
Trevor Percival died on Tuesday 24th April 2018 aged 75, after a long illness. Trevor played for Fulford Road Working Men’s Club in the York League, and was a member of the team that won Division 1 two seasons running (1975-76 and 1976-77). He formed a club at Thornton-le-Clay in 2012 and they won Division 4 in 2012-13 and Division 3 in 2013-14. Trevor had success at the York Closed, winning the Men’s Doubles in 1971-72 and 1972-73, Mixed Doubles in 1971-72, Division 3 Singles in 1964-65 and Division 4 Singles in 2012-13.
