The York One Star, presented by York & District Table Tennis Association as part of their 90th anniversary, was held at Railway Institute on Saturday 25th November. The tournament was such a great success, attracting sixty players from across the north of England and beyond, that we hope to make this an annual fixture. Thanks to Richard Crowther and Mick Wilcockson of the York Association for organizing the event and to Richard Hudson (Hull) for refereeing. Trophies were presented by Tim Smith (York Association Chairman).
Results of the finals
Stephen Horsfield and Shaun Ellis in action in the Men's Singles final
Stephen Horsfield won the Men’s Singles, defeating Shaun Ellis in the final. Shaun won the first game 11-3, and came back from 6-10 down to win the second 12-10. Stephen then seemed to find an extra gear and won the next three games comfortably to complete a great comeback. Stephen had a relatively comfortable path to the final, dropping just one game, while Shaun has a tough semi-final against Yonatan Caspi, which he won 11-9 in the fifth set.
The Ladies’ Singles was won by Zarnab Jamal. She produced a confident display to beat Linda Simpson 3-0 in the final.
Mikey Arnold of York reached the final of the Juniors’ Singles but was beaten in straight sets by Adam Webster. Mikey won his group and semi-final relatively easily and it might have been a different story in the final if he could have taken the third game in the final against Adam, which he narrowly lost 10-12.
Stephen Horsfield also won the Veterans’ Singles. Stephen is the sixteenth-ranked veteran in England. In a close final he defeated Dave Randerson 11-6 in the deciding set.
Victor Guang Shi, ranked 22 in England, won the Prize Singles, defeating Shaun Ellis in the final.
