Winter League
Coneysthorpe ‘A’ (Ashley Hodgson, Martin Lowe, Joel Wright) retained the Division 1 championship, again beating YRI 'A', formerly Sessions 'A', (Nathan Horsley, Richard Moss, Mick Wilcockson) into second place. Richard Moss topped the averages with Martin Lowe in second place and Ashley Hodgson in third.
Division 2 was won by YRI 'E' (Alan Balmforth, Matt Graham, John Temple, Filip Wojtowiak, Trevor Wright), just 8 points clear of Bootham 'C' (Mike Cooper, Rich Harrison, Richard Ingleby, Dave Rawlings) who missed out on promotion after losing a play-off. Tim Ang topped the averages with Filip Wojtowiak in second place.
CE Electric UK (Dave Boothroyd, Dave Quinlan, Nigel Reeson, Dave Robinson, Alan Wren) topped Division 3, 20 points ahead of BT 'A' (Terry Botting, Howard Broadbent, George Morrison, Dave Norville) who were also promoted after a play-off. Nigel Reeson topped the averages, with Dave Robinson and George Morrison close behind.
Division 4 champions were University 'B' (Daniel Chan, Andrew Coupe, Sam Cross, Joe Knowles, Xiaofei Zhang). York RI 'H' (Mike Dinsdale, Chris Megone, John Mothersill, Colin Smith) finished second but missed out on promotion after a play-off. David Dunn topped the averages, with Daniel Chan and Xiaofei Zhang in second and third.
York Closed Championships
Richard Moss (York RI) won the Men’s Singles title for the sixth time and the third time in succession. He beat Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) in the final. This was the seventh successive final between these two players.
Jane Cohen (York RI) regained her Ladies' Singles title, beating newcomer Dirui Hu (University) in the final.
In the doubles, Nathan Horsley and Richard Moss (York RI) won the Men’s event, Jane Cohen retained the Ladies’ event with Anne Barnard (York RI) and the Mixed Doubles with Nathan Horsley.
James Atkins (Shepherds) retained the Junior Singles title, beating Jake McCarthy (York RI) in the final. Jake defeated defeated Ethan Lowe (Coneysthorpe) in the Cadets’ singles final.
Handicap Competitions
The Bagshaw Trophy (individual handicap competition) was held during the week before the start of the Winter League. Mick Wilcockson (York RI) beat last year's winner Jake McCarthy (York RI) in the final. The other finalists were Nathan Taylor (York RI) and Rick Gledhill (Bootham).
The finals of the team handicap knock-out competitions were played at the Railway Institute on Monday 16th May 2011. The Shepherds Trophy was won by Coneysthorpe 'A' (Ethan Lowe, Martin Lowe, Ian Stansfield). They beat Sessions 'B' (Julian Taylor, Peter Taylor, Len Watson) 5.5 - 3.5 in the final. York RI 'E' (Alan Balmforth, Matt Graham, Filip Wojtowiak) beat Coneysthorpe 'B' (Mal Haswell, Chris Londesbrough, Keith Wilkinson) 5 - 3 in the Machell Trophy.
The Summer League (2010) was won by York RI 'E' (David Dunn, Lewis McCarthy, Mike Shepherdson). They beat Holgate WMC 'B' (Alfie Potter, Steve Potter, Keith Webster) 5.5 - 2.5 in the final.
York League players representing Yorkshire
Martin Lowe and Ashley Hodgson, who both play for Coneysthorpe A in the York League Division 1, together with a former Coneysthorpe player, Rebecca George, were part of the Yorkshire 2nd team which has won promotion from the County Division 2A to 1A.
Yorkshire Club Veterans Championship
Martin Lowe and Ashley Hodgson were also part of the Coneysthorpe team that reached the final of the Yorkshire Club Veterans Championship. In the final they lost to Dewsbury by the narrowest of margins, 5-4.
Yorkshire Veterans' League
In division 2 York I (Mick Wilcockson (16/18), John Farmery (13/18), Jon Wooldridge (10/12), Richard Crowther (9/18), Jo Suchecki (2/3)) finished second and are promoted while York II (Martin Hood, Mick Kenyon, Alfie Potter, Jo Suchecki) finished mid-table.
York III (Jeff Cohen, Rich McCarthy, Tim Smith, Keith Webster) finished top of division 3 and are promoted. Mike Fenby, who plays in the York League and represents Scarborough in the Yorkshire League, won the merit award in this division.
Deaths
Keith Bojas: Keith represented York in representative matches on over 100 occasions, and was a Division One Championship winner on two occasions with Fulford Road WMC, as well as a seven times mens’ doubles and five times mixed doubles winner at the York Closed Championships.
Mary Ellis: Mary won the Ladies’ Singles at the York Closed in 1960 and 1966, Ladies’ Doubles in 1950 and 1970 and Mixed Doubles in 1950.
Len Godderidge: Len fulfilled a variety of roles within the York League management committee, spanning 35 years from 1957 to 1992, including serving as league chairman, match secretary and handbook secretary as one of the major contributors in the league’s history. In the latter role he printed the handbook from his garden shed, using printing blocks. He was also secretary of the Hospitals side for many years. As a talented and competitive player he won the Bagshaw Trophy in 1965/6, and was the veterans’ champion in 1961 and 1970.
Ray Holroyd: Ray retired to York a few years ago and played for Holgate WMC before setting up a club at Hartrigg Oaks. He also helped at the coaching sessions at Millthorpe School on Friday evenings.
Alan Milner: Alan played for many years in the York League for Fulford Road WMC and more recently Shepherds.
