Winter League
Sessions 'A' (Nathan Horsley, Richard Moss, Mick Wilcockson) won Division 1, beating Coneysthorpe ‘A’ (Rebecca George, Martin Lowe, Ian Stansfield, Joel Wright) into second place by 23 points. Richard Moss topped the averages ahead of Martin Lowe and Jan Natolski.
Division 2 was won by Shepherds ‘A’ (Dave Lamb, Dave Simpson, Stu Stevens, Keith Webster), 27 points clear of YRI ‘C’ (Rich Church, Rich McCarthy, Pat Swindell, Treveor Wright) who were also promoted. This is their second championship in succession as they won Division 3 last season. Dave Lamb topped the averages, ahead of Rich McCarthy and Peter Harpham.
Bootham CC ‘C’ (Mike Cooper, Ron Grace, Rich Harrison, Rich Ingleby, Bob Plant) topped Division 3, just four points ahead of NEDL/Bootham (Dave Boothroyd, Dave Quinlan, Nigel Reeson, Alan Wren) who were also promoted. Richard Ingleby topped the averages, ahead of Nigel Reeson.
Division 4 champions were Shepherds ‘D’ (Chris Armstrong, John Graham, Rob Pulleyn, Steve Webster). Sadly Chris Armstrong died in January. Also promoted were Norwich Union ‘A’ (Adrian Church, Matt Graham, Earnest Omanekode, Michal Slezak) who finished second. Rob Pulleyn and Chris Armstrong topped the averages.
York Closed Championships
Richard Moss (Sessions) won the Men’s Singles title for the fourth time. He beat Martin Lowe (Coneysthorpe) in the final after losing to him in the previous four finals.
Jane Cohen (York RI) won the Ladies’ Singles, beating Rebecca George (York RI) in the final.
In the doubles, Richard Moss and Mick Wilcockson (Sessions) won the Men’s event, Jane won the Ladies’ event with Anne Barnard (York RI), and the Mixed Doubles with Nathan Horsley (Sessions).
In the Junior Singles final Rebecca George beat Luke Blackburn (York RI). Lewis McCarthy (York RI) defeated his younger brother and team-mate Jake in the Cadets’ singles final.
Handicap Competitions
The Bagshaw Trophy (individual handicap competition) was held during the week before the start of the Winter League. Jake McCarthy (York RI) beat Richard Crowther (York RI) in the final. The other finalists were Keith Webster (Shepherds) and Geoff Leafe (York RI).
The finals of the team handicap knock-out competitions were played at the Railway Institute on Friday 8th May 2009. The Shepherds Trophy was won by Sessions A (Richard Moss, Len Watson, Mick Wilcockson). They beat Holgate WMC A (Graham Hatfield, Martin Hood, Alfie Potter) 5.5 - 2.5. Norwich Union (Michal Slezak, Adrian Church, Andrew Slezak) beat YRI H (Lewis McCarthy, Richard McCarthy, Colin Smith) 5-4 in the Machell Trophy. Steve Tindall, of sponsors NEDL, presented the trophies.
The Summer League (2008) was won by Bootham CC B (Rich Harrison, Jim Mills, Lee Poulter). They beat Holgate WMC C (Mike Belton, Martin Hood, John Orchard) 5.5-2.5 in the final.
Yorkshire League
York I finished mid-table in Veterans’ Division 1. York II only missed out on promotion from Division 2 by one point.
