April 17th, 2023

Peyton Mermon
Burgettstown
Sophomore
Events: 100m, 200m, 400m, & Javelin

When did you first become interested in track and field?
My fifth-grade teacher and current coach, Mr. Foster, was always telling me about the track meets since he was a coach, and it just always interested me.

What is your training schedule like?
It is challenging because I do both softball and track. I have multiple games a week and track meets, so getting a good workout in happens maybe once a week.

What is your favorite track and field memory?
Walking to the 400m start in front of the grandstands at states. When I saw how many people were in the stands, I got very nervous, but this year I’ll know what to expect.

What is your goal as a track and field athlete?
To run and throw at a division 1 university.

What is your favorite track and field event to watch?
Women’s 4x400m, especially during the Olympics and NCAA finals.

What is the most underrated aspect of track and field?
All the intense training that is put into this sport. A lot of people think we just go out and run.

What is your favorite track and field event to participate in? I’m really enjoying the 200m this season.

What is your proudest moment as a track and field athlete?
Qualifying for states in the 400m and javelin as a freshman.

What is your favorite quote?
Regarding the 400m “It is only a minute out of your day.”- Coach Megan

What are your future goals in track and field?
Medal at states.

What is the most important thing you have learned about confidence in track and field?
I’ve learned that I need to go into my races more confident because I tend to let my nerves take over when I’m about to run.

Peyton is a unique athlete in the WPIAL, having qualified for the PIAA Championships in both the Javelin and 400-meter dash during her freshmen year. Recently, she delivered a remarkable performance at the Chartiers-Houston Invitational, securing first-place finishes in the 200m, 400m, and Javelin events. As a result, she was awarded the meet MVP Track & Field award. Looking ahead, Peyton aims to finish the season with a sub-60 in the 400m dash and a Javelin throw of 125+ to secure her trip to the PIAA Championships for the second straight year.
