"MJ is able to relate to and communicate effectively to a very diverse group of people, which was essential in keeping our customers satisfied. She was never prejudiced, and always treated everyone who walked in the door equally." - Emiliano Ramirez, Service Manager, Letter, 2022
"Innovation is the result of people with diverse expertise and perspectives coming together, being able to collaborate, experiment together, and learn, and it is the leader’s job to create the structure required for that collaboration: shared purpose, shared values, and rules of engagement." ~ Linda Hill, professor, Harvard Business School
In a classroom, first I ask my students what they expect of the teacher, then I compare that list to one of what I expect of them, agreeing that the lists are identical, sometimes with a few adjustments to a more general wording. We focus on positive wording, such as "Allow public speaking," instead of "Don't interrupt others."
This technique I also apply to management, so that it is easy to:
Establish expectations
Refer back to those expectations
Set limits on scope of work and behavior
Ensure a healthy Workplace Culture
Set boundaries for Appropriate Forms of Play
Whether we utilize a tool such as FISH! or Growth Mindset, as a manager, I can teach and follow concepts for a healthy and thriving workplace culture
