  2. How do you know you are healthy?

  3. What do you do with your feelings?

  4. How do you show good character?

  5. Who are your friends and family?

  6. Why do you do things?

Big Idea(s)

  1. There are multiple dimensions of health: physical, mental, social, and emotional.

  2. You know you are healthy when your body, mind, actions toward others, and feelings are at their best.

  3. Everyone has all kinds of feelings and it is important that you let people know how you are feeling through your positive words, body language, and how you act. It is important to think about how your expression of your feelings will affect others. Everyone shares feelings in their own way.

  4. You show good character by acting in a way that is best for you and others, whether someone else is watching or not.

  5. Your family and friends are people you care about and who care about you. You should show respect to each and every person.

  6. You do things for many different reasons: because you want to or don't want to, you know you should or you shouldn't, someone told you, something looks attractive or inviting or dangerous or scary, or you know it is the right thing to do.

LEARNING TARGET / SUCCESS CRITERIA

I will explain how to be a responsible family member. I will get along with my family and show respect for others.

OPENING (Engage)

Talk About It

What are some of the jobs you do at home?

It's important for everyone in the family to help each other.

Each person in a family can find ways to help the whole family.

Vocabulary Strategies

chore - a small job at home

The jobs you have been sharing and discussing are called chores.

rule - a direction that tells you how to act

expectation - an understanding that gives you good information when deciding how to act

Adult family members make family rules to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Adult family members set expectations to help you make good decisions that keep everyone safe and healthy.

Have you set any rules or expectations with your friends or family members?

Families Rule! - Expectations Shared

What family rule or expectation might the people in the pictures below be following?

Why Do You Do Things?

Look at the pictures below and hink about some of the reasons you do things.

Besides giving you rules to follow, how do the people in your family get you to do things?

One of ways that our families help us is by getting us to do healthful things. For example, a girl might remind her brother to wear a helmet when he rides his bike.

Character Trait: Be Trustworthy

  • be honest

  • don't deceive, cheat, or steal

  • be reliable

  • have courage to do the right thing, especially when no one is watching

WORK PERIOD (Explore/Explain/Extend/Elaborate)

We're going to pretend that this is a laundry basket (milk crate). These comets are socks. Some family chores relate to clean clothes.

  • Stand near the basket and take turns tossing in the socks.

  • As you toss in the socks, name a chore you can do to help out your family.

Switch members of different groups to make new groups. Act out the chores you identified and see if your new group members can guess the chore.

CLOSING (Evaluate)

Build Character - Be Trustworthy

It is important to show your family that you are trustworthy. Draw yourself doing something trustworthy.

Life Skill - Set Health Goals

Choose one household chore and ask permission at home to do it. We will make a large 1 week calendar. You will right your initials on it every day you do the chore.
