Supporting Standard(s)

Essential Question(s)

  1. What are the multiple dimensions of health?

  2. How do you know you are healthy?

  3. What do you do with your feelings?

  4. How do you show good character?

  5. Who are your friends and family?

  6. Why do you do things?

Big Idea(s)

  1. There are multiple dimensions of health: physical, mental, social, and emotional.

  2. You know you are healthy when your body, mind, actions toward others, and feelings are at their best.

  3. Everyone has all kinds of feelings and it is important that you let people know how you are feeling through your positive words, body language, and how you act. It is important to think about how your expression of your feelings will affect others. Everyone shares feelings in their own way.

  4. You show good character by acting in a way that is best for you and others, whether someone else is watching or not.

  5. Your family and friends are people you care about and who care about you. You should show respect to each and every person.

  6. You do things for many different reasons: because you want to or don't want to, you know you should or you shouldn't, someone told you, something looks attractive or inviting or dangerous or scary, or you know it is the right thing to do.

PRE-INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY

Helping Kids Resolve Conflict | Sesame Street

OPENING (Engage)

Talk About It

We're going to use the video we just watched to talk about "Resolving Conflicts."

We're also going to use this Conflict Resolution Model to talk about how Elmo made decisions:

  • Step 1 - Stay Calm

  • Step 2 - Listen to Each Other

  • Step 3 - Talk It Out

  • Step 4 - Ask for Help If You Need It

In step 1, what was the conflict for Elmo?

In step 2, why was it important for Elmo to listen to his friends?

In step 3, what do Elmo and his friends decide to do?

In step 4, who did Elmo ask for help when he could not resolve the conflict by himself?

Whenever you are in a situation to make a choice about how you are going to treat someone, please remember to:

"Treat others as you want them to treat you."

Practicing Life Skills - Resolving Conflict

Resolving conflicts is a Life Skill or a skill we can use throughout our life.

Let's all practice resolving conflict by applying this life skill in small groups:

  1. Two children are coloring and both want to use the only blue crayon.

  2. Two children are each building a block tower. They both want to use the only arch block in the set.

  3. Two children want to play a game together. They both want to be the one to go first.
