Essential Question(s)

  1. What are the multiple dimensions of health?

  2. How do you know you are healthy?

  3. What do you do with your feelings?

  4. How do you show good character?

  5. Who are your friends and family?

  6. Why do you do things?

Big Idea(s)

  1. There are multiple dimensions of health: physical, mental, social, and emotional.

  2. You know you are healthy when your body, mind, actions toward others, and feelings are at their best.

  3. Everyone has all kinds of feelings and it is important that you let people know how you are feeling through your positive words, body language, and how you act. It is important to think about how your expression of your feelings will affect others. Everyone shares feelings in their own way.

  4. You show good character by acting in a way that is best for you and others, whether someone else is watching or not.

  5. Your family and friends are people you care about and who care about you. You should show respect to each and every person.

  6. You do things for many different reasons: because you want to or don't want to, you know you should or you shouldn't, someone told you, something looks attractive or inviting or dangerous or scary, or you know it is the right thing to do.

LEARNING TARGET / SUCCESS CRITERIA

I will discuss ways to show respect for friends. I will tell how to make wise decisions with friends.

PRE-INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY

Friends | The Singing Walrus

OPENING (Engage)

Talk About It

Today we are going to learn about treating others the way we want them to treat us.

We just heard the "Friends Song."

Today we are going to learn more about being a friend.

The words to the "Friends Song" say:

  • "I don't walk/sit/eat/play/read/watch alone. I have my friends."

  • "All my friends can walk/sit/eat/play/read/watch with me."

Sometimes it is nice to do these things by ourselves, and it is also nice to share these activities with a friend.

And always remember, whenever you are in a situation to make a choice about how you are going to treat someone, please remember to:

"Treat others as you want them to treat you."

Vocabulary Strategies

Life Skill - Make Wise Decisions (Thumbs Up or Down)

  • Two friends decide not to talk to a stranger and go find a trusted adult.

  • Two friends find matches and decide to make their own campfire.

  • Two friends find a cool toy on the playground and decide to bring it to their teacher.

  • Two friends see someone wearing clothes different from what they are used to seeing. They laugh and tell the person their clothes are weird.

  • Two friends see someone sitting alone on the playground and decide to invite them to play.

Remember that all of these scenarios are opportunities to make new friends or strengthen friendships that already exist.
