Bounce (Self) & Catch - Task 2

K - Invasion/Target - 46-47 PE

  • Student Directions - Today you are going to catch items that bounce. Wait for your teacher’s directions.

  • Teacher Notes - Have students stand on a spots as a visual reminder of personal space in general space. Place different size balls in hula hoops at the front of the class. Explain to students that they will be catching items that bounce with two hands. Remind students that their hands should stay together, and their eyes should watch the item land in their hands. Instruct students to come forward, pick one item, return to their personal space, and place it between their feet.

Remind students on the command freeze, they should be standing on their spot, with their item between their feet and their eyes looking at the teacher.

On the signal Go, have students put their feet on either side of their spot and bounce their ball on it (Teacher demonstrates).

Remind students that they want the ball to come all the way up, catch it at its highest point by placing their hands underneath the ball, and watch the ball fall into their hands. Remind students if they lose control of their ball to get it and go back to their personal space before they bounce it again. Give them a few minutes to practice. Explain to the students that catching the ball at its highest point is catching it at high level. Have students to catch the ball at all three levels (low, medium, high). Have students place their ball back in the hula hoop and pick another ball to work with. Have students to continue to practice catching at different levels. Be sure to showcase the students who are staying in their space while bouncing and catching the ball.

Variations - Foam balls (different sizes if possible), reaction balls and tennis balls are some items to place in the hula hoops.

**During the closing of your lesson, have the students talk with their elbow partner about which ball was the easiest to catch? Why? Which ball was the hardest to catch? Why? Which ball do they think would be the most challenging for participants on Double Dare to catch off a bounce? Have the students share their ideas prior to lining up.

Dribbling & Passing w Feet - Task 2

4th - Invasion/Target - 46-47 PE

  • Student Directions - Today you will be exploring dribbling and passing through the game of soccer. First, you will be working on our dribbling and passing skills with a partner. Next, you will put it all together and play the game of soccer. After you review the rules, you will separate into teams and begin the game. You may put on your team’s color jersey and wait for further instruction.

These are the rules you will be reviewing for this game - http://www.allstaractivities.com/sports/soccer/soccer-rules.htm

  • Teacher Notes - Begin this lesson by grouping students into pairs and allow them to practice dribbling the ball and passing the soccer ball to their partner to gain mastery of the basic skills of soccer. Next, separate students by skill level so that each team is equally skilled and review the basic rules of soccer. After students are grouped, move into game play. Best practice for team division: let students’ pair in groups by themselves and play 1 round of rock, paper, scissors. The winning student is on one team and the other student is on the other.

  • If the ball touches the ground, the other team takes possession where it dropped.

  • Only the goalkeeper is allowed to come into contact with the floor of the goal area.

  • Goalkeepers are allowed out of the goal area, but must not retain possession if they are outside the goal area.

Kick Stationary Ball & Dribble w Foot - Task 2

As you swing your dominate foot forward, you will shift your weight forward striking the ball with light force. Your partner will stop the ball and place it stationary in front of them. Then, your partner will dribble the ball with the inside of the foot as they walk back to you.

  • Teacher Notes - Set up stations and demonstrate kicking a stationary ball using light force. Demonstrate dribbling a ball with the inside of the foot while walking back to the kicker. Equipment may vary based on your school.

Self-Toss & Catch - Task 1

K - Invasion/Target - 43-44 PE

  • Student Directions - You will take one object from the hula hoop in front of the class and return to your personal space. Place the object between your feet and wait for the teacher directions.

  • Teacher Notes - Have the students sit on a marker in their personal space. Place different size objects (juggling scarves, yarn balls, bean bags, foam balls, etc.) in hula hoops at the front of the class. Instruct students to come forward, pick one item, return to their personal space, and place it between their feet.

Instruct the students that their item needs to be between their feet and their eyes are looking at you, on the command Freeze. Have students demonstrate how many different body parts they can use to catch their item in their own personal space. Remind students if they lose control of their item to get it and go back to their personal space before they toss it again. Give them a few minutes to practice. Compliment the students on the different body parts they are using to catch the items.

Have students work on catching their item with two hands. Tell students when catching, their hands and fingers should be together as if they were making a bowl for the item to land. On the signal Go, toss your item and catch it with two hands. Give them a few minutes to practice. Have the students freeze for directions. Explain to the students that catching an item close to the ground means catching at a low level. Remind the students to watch the item to come down as it falls into their hands. Give them a few minutes to practice.

Explain to the students that catching an item at the middle of their body while standing is called medium level. Give them a few minutes to practice. Have students place their item back in the hula hoop and pick another item to work with. Have students continue to practice with different items. Use the same directions, but now have the kids focus on where they are looking. Eyes should follow the item into their hands as they are catching on whatever level they are catching.

During the closing of the lesson, have the students talk with an elbow partner (Think, Pair, Share) about which item was the easiest to catch? Why? Which one was the hardest to catch? Why? Have them share their thoughts with the group.
