PRE-INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITY

What is a Family? | Robot Songs

OPENING (Engage)

Talk About It

What do you think the group of people in each picture below is?

What clues tell you?

Vocabulary Strategies

family - a group of people who belong together

Families are important and different. As the lines in the song from the video we watched at the beginning of class said, "What is a family? It means different things to different people."

No two families are exactly alike.

How are families in the pictures different from one another?

How are families in the pictures the same?

All families change over time. New babies arrive. Family members move into or out of the home. Family members die. Family members divorce or re-marry.

Family members may have different feelings about change.

Remember that everyone has feelings and that it's okay to have all kind of feelings.

What do we do with our feelings? What are appropriate ways to manage our emotions?:

  • anger

  • happiness

  • sadness

  • excitement

  • confusion

  • love

  • fear

  • pride

  • worry

WORK PERIOD (Explore/Explain/Extend/Elaborate)

How Many in the Family?

Looking at our 5 pictures above, who are the people in these families? Write down who they are.

How many people in each of these families? Write down the number.

Families Change

Draw pictures of your family now.

Then draw pictures of how your family might change.

CLOSING (Evaluate)

Math: Graph Family Size

Ask each child to write the number of people who live in their home. Then use the information to make a class pictograph.

Communicate

It's important to share feelings about family changes with a parent or guardian. Invite volunteers to use the puppets to act out such a conversation between an adult family member and a child.
