If you like bananas and broccoli, you eat two healthful foods. But if you eat nothing but bananas and broccoli, you do not have a healthful diet. To have a healthful diet you need to eat a variety of healthful foods. You also need to eat foods in the right amounts.
What are the food groups?
You need to eat a variety of foods from the MyPlate five food groups each day. That doesn't mean you should eat foods from only one group at each meal! The most healthful diet includes foods from several groups at each meal or snack.
Grains
Foods in this group are grains or are made from grain. They include tortillas, cereals, rice, breads, pasta, and crackers. These foods contain carbohydrates, proteins, fiber, minerals, and vitamins. Most are low in fat.
Fruit
Fruits include peaches, strawberries, bananas, and pineapples. These foods are rich in minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates, and fiber. They have little or no fat.
Vegetable
Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, corn, lettuce, and celery are in this group. Vegetables are rich in minerals, vitamins, fiber, and carbohydrates. Many have small amounts of protein or fat.
Protein
Nuts, dry beans, eggs, fish, poultry, and meat are all good protein sources. These foods also contain vitamins and minerals. Many of these foods are high in fat.
Dairy
Cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and all kinds of hard cheeses are made from milk.
Milk and foods made from milk are good sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals.
Some of these foods are also high in fat.
Fats, Oils, Sweets
Doughnuts, chocolate bars, cookies, cakes, and chips are just a few of the foods in this group. These foods give you very few nutrients. They may also contain large amounts of salt, fat, and sugar.
How can you have a healthful, balanced diet? Eat a combination of foods from each of the first five groups every day. When you eat, don't choose too many foods from the Fats, Oils, and Sweets group. You get plenty of these nutrients from foods in the other groups.
How can you be sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need?
A healthy eating routine is important at every stage of life. It can have positive effects that add up over time. It’s important to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy or fortified soy alternatives. When deciding what to eat or drink, choose options that are full of nutrients. Make every bite count.
MyPlate divides food into five (5) major groups. The size of each part of MyPlate tells you how much of each kind of food you should eat. For example, half of your plate should be fruits (focus on whole fruits) and vegetables (vary your veggies) with slightly more vegetables than fruit. The other half of your plate should be grains (make half your grains whole grains) and protein with slightly more grains than protein (vary your protein routine).
No matter what foods you like, MyPlate will work for you. It shows you that no one food group gives you all your nutrients. It can help you choose a healthful balance of foods. It reminds you not to eat too many unhealthful foods. By using MyPlate, you can be sure to get a balanced diet. A balanced diet (BA luhnst dy•uht) is made up of a healthful amount of foods from each of the food groups. Eating a balanced diet gives your body the nutrients it needs.
REMEMBER...MyPlate is a tool to help you achieve a balanced diet. You can learn what you learn to achieve a balanced diet.
