What Are Doctors?

  • Doctors help sick people get better. They treat people in emergencies. They also try to stop people from becoming sick. People go to doctors for checkups.

Where Doctors Work

  • Doctors usually work in hospitals or clinics. They perform checkups and surgeries there. Some doctors run their own offices. A few doctors visit nursing homes and poor communities.

Clothing

  • Many doctors wear a white coat while seeing patients. Some doctors wear scrubs. They wear rubber gloves and masks to protect against diseases.

Tools

  • During a checkup, doctors use a stethoscope to listen to a patient's chest. They check a patient's eyes and ears with special lights. Doctors sometimes use machines to test for other problems.

Types of Doctors

  • There are many types of doctors. Some doctors choose to study certain parts of the body. Other doctors may care for only one kind of patient. A doctor who treats only children is called a pediatrician.
