THYSSENKRUPP
ISIS & ISIS 2
--- Disclaimer ---
This website is not discussing terrorism and has no connection to any terrorist group. ISIS is simply the name of an elevator model discussed on this page, the name is only a coincidence.
Overview
The ISIS was ThyssenKrupp's first machine-room-less (MRL) traction elevator model for the North American market. It was introduced in February 2004.
The original ISIS was discontinued in 2005, and replaced with the second-generation model, the ISIS 2.
The ISIS introduced ThyssenKrupp's "K-Core" cables, which were made of Kevlar. ThyssenKrupp claimed these cables would last longer than traditional steel cables, however a 2007 accident proved otherwise.

Characteristics
Most ISISes and ISIS IIs have a unique variant of ThyssenKrupp's Aurora fixtures. These fixtures are mounted on a small, two-button-wide panel, perpendicular to the door. ISIS/ISIS II elevators have loud, buzzing motors, that usually can be clearly heard from inside the cab.
Most ISISes have ECI door interlocks.
2007 free-fall incident
On October 9, 2007, a rope severed on a ThyssenKrupp ISIS 2 at the Seattle Children's Hospital, causing it to free-fall from the sixth floor. The elevator's safety brakes engaged, and the elevator came to a complete stop at the fourth floor. All five passengers aboard were rescued, no one was injured or killed.
ThyssenKrupp announced soon after the incident that all ISIS elevators would have their 'K-Core' ropes inspected bi-weekly, and safety devices were developed that would stop the elevator if rope tension was lost. Most ISIS elevators have since had their ropes replaced with conventional steel ropes.
Following this incident, ThyssenKrupp ended production of the ISIS 2, and replaced it with the new Synergy model in 2008.
