Overview

The Gen2 is Otis's machine room less (MRL) traction elevator model. It was introduced in 2000, and was the first belt driven MRL model available in North America.

Characteristics

Gen2s have a very distinctive low-pitched buzzing motor. They usually level very quickly.

Newer MRL models have a small hinged panel on the top level door jamb, this contains the controller. Gen2s with machine rooms have the controller in the machine room. Clicking sounds can be heard coming from the controller when the elevator stops, starts, or closes its door, on both machine room and MRL Gen2s.

Newer Gen2s tend to break down if the occupant(s) jump inside the cab while moving, or activate the safety brake.
