5500

Overview

The 5500 is Schindler's low-to-mid rise MRL traction elevator model for the North American market. It was introduced in 2015, replacing the 400AE.

The 5500 fills the gap in Schindler's lineup between the low-rise MRL 3300, and the high-rise 7000. It can be used for 2-35 floors, with a maximum travel distance of 350 feet.

It uses Schindler's "Suspension Traction Media' (STM) belts instead of traditional ropes. Schindler claims these belts have a longer lifespan than cables, and allow for a smaller motor in the hoistway.

Characteristics

5500s are known to level very quickly and accurately, similarly to Otis Gen2, KONE MonoSpace, and Mitsubishi Diamond Trac.

They have very thin door tracks for their inner doors.

Their motors and door operators can usually be clearly heard.

5500s are of higher quality than Schindler's 3100 and 3300 models.

They can have Linea 100, PORT, 5500 Vandal Resistant, or EPCO fixtures (see Fixture Guide > Schindler)
