I used an article from Latimes involving a fifteen-year-old girl named Kris MacFarlane for my final project. The report focused on Kris MacFarlane, who was alone in her house playing the piano when a "large man" with a knife told her not to make a move. The article states that in 1976 days before Christmas, Kris was alone at home for 10 mins before she was attacked and raped for the next two hours. In the 1970s, rape was on the rise; Sacramento city alone had four rapists, one of whom had amassed 42 victims. Rape was also considered taboo in the 1970s; newspapers would call it the "four-letter word because it was too vulgar. Forty years later, when kris met other victims, she introduced herself by saying, "I am No. 10." because rape was seen as vulgar, and most women never talked about their experiences.
This article highlights how the victims of sexual assault felt shame to talk about being attached because sex was considered taboo.
